Dragon won't upgrade

I have an SSD with the force_upgrade folder in it but it starts up normal and using hte maintenance menu won't force it to update. Anyone run into a camera that wouldn't accept an update?

I'd maybe reformat the card then re copy the force upgrade folder.
possibly try a different card?

I've never seen this but that'd be my first troubleshoot.

Yeah I tried formatting a few different ways and no luck. First try on a different card and it copied no problem.

Very strange. Makes me suspicious of that card now.

Do a secure format on the card as they can become fragmented.

I do a secure format about once a month on all my media just as routine maintenance thing.

When I received my OLPF upgrade from RED the software was version 5.1.55. I liked the beta version I had been using, so I tried to reload 5.2.16. It was a no-go. 5.2.16 is considered an obsolete step backward, even from a 5.1.55 standpoint. I got the latest beta, 5.2.21, and that worked (with a minor hiccup). Are your versions in order?

I had the same issue with a loaner camera, got my Dragon back and everything was fine. Found it odd myself!

I've had the same issue a couple of different times. As I recall, it had something to do with how the computer handled the force upgrade folder. Check to see if the file is the proper size, then check to see if the force upgrade file is the right size on the SSD.

I think I had to close Windows Explorer and reopen it, then pull the force upgrade file onto the SSD.

Just don't give up. There is nothing wrong with anything other than the process of getting it onto the SSD.

I suspect you are reformatting and then manually deleting the files created with the roll number. Leave those files there and just add the force upgrade folder with them... Tell me I solved your problem!

Currently going through Force Upgrade Hell with new release 5.2.28

When I check size it reads as though fully downloaded. But when I check Force Upgrade folder it reads zero size.

Are you "ejecting" the SSD from the computer correctly - so that it flushes all writes to the disk? How you do this varies on OS and connection method.

For me, it doesn't seem to matter. Usually, you paste it, then properly eject the SSD. I usually put it right back to know if it still has the folder and contents before I put it on the camera. The MINI SSD has both the force_upgrade folder and the proper contents inside, but camera still fails to recognize it.

Trent, I don't know how you did it but I followed the same procedure as before, including shutting down the SSD data transfer module attached to the computer, and then the SSD mini mag worked to upgrade the camera as planned. Will try second camera with 1.8" SSD after lunch.

I've never believed in mental manipulation before, but this event has me wondering. I'm thinking of lining my house with tinfoil just in case.

EDIT: Just finished upgrading firmware on second camera via the 1.8" SSD. I think I may have varied my procedure in only one small way to get these two force upgrades to work.

Trent suggested undocking the SSD media transfer connection. You have the option to "eject" a thumbdrive from Windows but the SSD media transfer module doesn't have the "eject" option in Windows Explorer. Still, after reading Trent's suggestion I clicked on the media reader instead of the media located on the SSD.

That one little step was the difference between success and failure.
