  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

I have been on the upgrade program since RED One and it has worked out very well for me
I moved over to minimags last year and now my clients prefer them
I now rent out my REDmags to other RED owners who never have enough
But I have a lot of shelved accessories......

Got to say this is the worst name for a camera ever!
I loved the name Dragon, and skull seemed at least in keeping with this and not too caught up in the military style nonsense but...

Anyway I guess it is what is inside the camera that counts and not the tacky badge but all the same. :(

I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Will there be 2 flavors of Weapon like Epic and Scarlet?

Hey Jarred, Thanks so much for keeping the upgrades and letting us know ahead of time, I really appreciate it, and it was one of the main reasons I chose to buy into RED.

As for the Minimag, should I buy the Minimag Side & SSD now? Or will we get an option to upgrade to Minimag side with Weapon upgrade?

I know you can't upgrade SSD's for liability issues.

Personally, I'm excited the Weapon will be offered to purchase outright...without a Dragon upgrade. For those that don't want to go through the upgrade process, its nice the W can be purchased straight out.

NAB will definitely be more exciting than what I was hoping for.
 
I for one would like to just say that the upgrade path is what has allowed me to progress in what I do and own a camera that was ultimately out of my reach any other way.

Having purchased a Used MX and upgrading to Dragon and now as it stands having top of the crop camera for a lesser price than buying a used Dragon I cant help but appreciate the fact that RED stays loyal to there customers and offers a discount.

I cant imagine people would be complaining about a discount if Arri released a new camera and said any previous Alexa owners etc. will receive a percentage off of there new purchase, not only do we get a discount we get the opportunity to re use some of the parts of our existing model to keep prices down.

I am also sure that this is something that RED keep in mind when doing R&D, It would probably be easier to build a new body around whatever awesome technology they have but they have continued to try and use the past models and keep things going for as long as possible.

Having still spent a fortune to own this kit obviously its hard to keep up financially and to always have the newest, but if we want the image to progress and to have these improvements surely we have to pay for them, they are in fact a company and a company has to make money.

My initial reaction to all theses posts were "fucking hell another upgrade i'm going to be broke" but after reading this whole topic and taking a moment to really think about what we get offered through this portal and from RED it put a smile on my face, it truly is unlike any other company and I for one am extremely happy to be part of the family.

It wouldn't have been my first choice either, which is why I thought Brandon's guess was off the mark. It's not so much because of the military and warmongering connotations as it is the word "weapon" seems too generic a term, depending on how you use it.

"Weaponize" is a cooler sounding word than "weapon." The notion that this level of power and control transforms your camera into a weapon will be seen as cool by many.

The RED Weapon kinda feels like saying the Lamborghini Automobile. It'll take some getting used to.

The funny thing is, by this time next year, calling this camera Weapon will seem as natural as saying Epic, Scarlet and Dragon does now.

If you lobby hard enough, maybe you can get them to change it to something like the RED Warlock...or Witch.
 
I have chosen RED for too many reasons to enumerate them here.

However, I avoided the Dragon upgrade because I had clients who were returned to me after having worked with Dragon because for them didn’t worth a higher rent. And they said that if I go to Dragon they’ll pay the same as for the Epic.

I want at some point to make my upgrade to Dragon/Weapon but right now I’m quite blind, knowing nothing of what this new upgrade can do. If the price from Dragon to Weapon is like 2K is all fine, but if I need to pay 12k for going to Dragon and another 12k to go for weapon…this is something that we need to know…

not to mention the extras that I need to change (mags for ex)

Damn that's exciting. I was about to purchase an EPIC MX but now, after seeing this, I think I'll just straight up get an EPIC DRAGON instead...though I will have to get fewer accessories (budget's a little tight at the moment) but it's totally worth it in the long run if it means a cheaper upgrade to WEAPON when it's revealed. Can't wait for NAB, Thanks Jarred!

+) I suspect a number of non-CF Dragon owners would probably be in a position to upgrade to to a CF-Weapon should that opportunity arise... :D

As always I am in awe of Red's integrity, proud to feel that we are part of an extended family, and excited by innovation and opportunity that revolves around the company.

Looks like two Aperiodic vent on the front that could cut down the High frequency sounds of a fan cutting through the air whist letting air to rush in (quietly)... so there may still be a suction pump behind the badge.

The 7 small holes Might be wireless control transceiver. Not sure about a scratch sound / or ancient light sensor.

Can't belive I read this whole tread.... I'm booking my vacation to NAB!!! Should we bring our dragons? Maybe get upgraded on the spot!!!!! Smh RED is taking all my money!!!!!

Actually I'm ok with RED Weapon because weapons don't shoot people... people who upgrade from Dragons shoot people... places, things, bears, birds, bees. '-)

The Red Witch, I like it! ;)

Warlock I'm less keen on although I have to say I would have even prefered Red Warrior over Red Weapon.
Red Weapon is one of the worst names I could think of in that context.

Maybe the Red Sorcerer or Red Magus or maybe Red River or Red Fire or all kinds of things...
...but not Red Weapon. :(

This is truly a blow to the heart. In an attempt to make lemonade out of a lemon...Is there any reason why we couldn't download the mini mags to the red mags? This would be a very save Backup.

If you guys make a thunderbolt RED Mag reader we could perform high speed downloads to RED Mag SSD in the field and send that up the river to transcode.

So please make a thunderbolt RED Mag SSD Reader Please.
