Dragon Tattoo marks 4K milestone

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is the tenth film this year to be released in 4K,
a new ultra high resolution digital film format that Sony hopes will become the industry standard.

whatever it takes. its been quite the 4K day...

Sony finally want to cash 4K in a near future.

They made 4K projector several years ago and now sold about 200 F65 in US.

4K racing filed just open at the end of 2011.

RED have 3 cars in (R1, Epic and Scarlet-X) , sony F65, Aaton will enter during next Summer, others probably follow after that,...

But also it must be mentioned that Apple iPad 3 will be HD and many other will immediately follow to bring their own HD pad on the market,...

The format war will continue and it's not so sure in the future that 4K cinema will earn more money than a sort of wireless HD tablet distribution,

simply a kind of market that will boost pretty soon and with very fast possibilty to take over the old distribution models like a big cinema theater.

Those in the industry know the jargon but it will take a marketing push for the general public to recognize "4K" and to associate it with a better cinema experience. If indeed the term 4K is adopted as the "brand".

after seeing 4k projected for the first time at RED studios, I'm excited for this! If you didn't know, there are theaters out there (many of them, in fact) that have 4k projectors installed. "Dragon Tattoo" is being shipped to theaters as a 4k master, so it seems likely many people will get to see this film projected in 4k, if they do their homework. I say homework, because I imagine you'll have to call the theater to see which house they're showing this movie in 4k in; looking at different theaters' websites earlier, didn't exactly give me a straight answer.

Happy..... to hear CMAX devenport Tasmania will have a 4k projector by March
Sad......... it will be after The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo shows......thats life

When I went up to the ticket counter, I asked if this 2:45 one was in 4K, and the kid at the counter had absolutely no idea what I was talking about, then he asked the guy next to him who thought he was all that, and answered me very condescendingly saying everything is the same don't worry about what it says on the screen, which made no sense at all because all the screen said was GWTDT @245, clearly showing that he had no idea what he was talking about either. I would have expected that at least the people working at the theater would know what 4K, as no one I went to see it with knew. If your wondering, yes it was playing in 4K.

I did notice though that before the film there was an IMAX logo animation. Though, as large as the screen was, I know it wasn't an IMAX screen (or theater). I feel like I've read this somewhere else, but is 4K a higher resolution than IMAX film (obviously film doesn't have a resolution) but if the two were to be played natively next to each other, which one would be bigger?

As I have mentioned in similar threads, the real head scratcher is why these exhibitors would throw down the coin for 4K projectors and then do virtually nothing to market them. Maybe I'm too tech oriented, but if I was showing GWDT in 4K from a 4K DCP at my place and my competitor down the street was showing it in 2K I would use that to try and increase my market share.

As many have noted, and I have experienced firsthand, trying to get definitive information from theater staff about which projectors (beyond digital v film) are employed in a given room and whether the DCP is 4K or 2K is rarely productive. Perhaps Google has conditioned us to expect such information to be at our fingertips so that when it's not we are offended...

In any case, as the big 3D marketing push fades I hold out hope that 4K will be the next "get 'em off the couch" rallying cry for the exhibitors.

Cheers - #19

That Sony hopes the 4k projection to become the industry standard.
