  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Sensor Issues on the DSMC2 bodies?

It will be a long time before I can afford it, but I am planning to move to a Raven from my Scarlet MX. I am a little hesitant, though, because I've heard about some weird issues that the Dragon sensor has had. The one I'm most worried about is purple fringing from strong backlights. As well as stronger-than-normal CMOS smear.

Are these problems (particularly the purple fringing) present in the DSMC2 cameras?

The problems you describe in large part triggered the whole OLPF-gate.

It ended with RED currently offering 3 OLPFs (with even more options from KipperTie).

The "low light" OLFP is where you are coming from. It produces cleaner images in low light scenarios, but has the polkadot "phenomenon". The "skin tone/highlight" OLPF got rid of the magenta dots and provides even creamier highlights and optimised colors, at the expense of some added noise in the shadows.

RED then decided to split the difference with the "Standard" OLPF. In theory it's the best of both worlds and it's what Raven comes with (and can't be replaced).

Certain usurers that appreciate the option with replaceable OLPFs might find Standard a compromise in situations where one of the extremes would have been better, but in essence you don't have to worry about the issues you describe. And all of this happened quite a while back too.

It sounds like you're not quite up to date on all things RED—and that is fine. If you want to read up, Phil Holland has a few threads with illustrating examples that show the effective difference between the filters.

Have Kenneth,

The CMOS smear on the Weapon at least is greatly reduced and I have not seen a hint of it even on some extreme shots.

CMOS smear is almost gone on weapon over epic dragon. You would need to be at 6400 iso to start seeing it in many cases you would with the epic. For 250-2000 shooting, its basically gone. Weapon fixed a lot of issues with the epic dragon can't due to it's processing power.

What about purple fringing?

I think I know what you mean. If you point a flashlight into the lens you get a magenta/purple "orb", or halo around the highlight. I've felt this is just another manifestation of the polka dots depending on f-stop and focal length.

But that has also been taken care of along the same lines with the new OLPFs.

This thread is one of several regarding the purple fringing. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?128065-purple-chromatic-aberration

It can be caused by optics, but that is not always the cause, as several Dragon users have noted that they have shot the exact same scene with Dragon and MX, and the Dragon produces the fringing even if the MX does not. I didn't even know about it until a year ago when I was on a set, and one shot with a blown out silk behind the actor exhibited terrible fringing all around the actor's silhouette. I've never seen anything like it.

So yeah, I was wondering if that issue was solved with the DSMC2 bodies (because it's obviously a problem that the Dragon is particularly sensitive to).
