  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon sensor footage

Where is any Dragon sensor footage? It boggles my mind that not only did they not release any footage before selling the sensor but that people are paying for the upgrade sight-unseen. I'm not saying I think it'll look bad, but come on, who buys a product without looking at it? Supposedly there are several cameras out there now with the new sensor but where is the footage?

Any one with links would be appreciated, my google search turns up nothing but a still of a fake lizard.

Nobody has bought it yet. They have just placed upgrade orders.

The same arguent could be made for the BMCC. Sold out before it was released.

If Arri announced a new camera, I am sure you would see a similar Amount of people willing to buy it no matter what.

Come on mate - I don't believe for a second that Eric hasn't already bought upgrades for every Epic you fellas have ;)

Say hi to him for me btw...

Actually, no one is paying. Just staying in line. When the time arrives, one can do the upgrade -and pay- or not.
As far as I recall -let me know if I´m wrong- I´ve never seen footage from a Sony Betacam or Digi Beta, even F900 before the camera was bought... you just payed Sony (or Panasonic, or JVC) , got the camera, and that was it. And no upgrades available: just sell or keep or store the old model, and pay full price for the new one.
I know that long before my turn arrives, footage and comments and criticism (good and bad) will be profusely around.

No - Most people who bought these things rented them first and saw for themselves, hands-on.

We put down money for our RED One when the thing was just a box :) They've kinda earned the sight unseen thing.

Jim had one Epic with Dragon sensor in Fiji several months ago. Don't tell me that it wasn't a working camera.. What I think is that Blackmagic and Red want to compare each other footages in order to correct mistakes. It is just a business move, I think, otherwise, it doesn't make any sense why we haven't seen footage from both yet ???

Edit: What about the cameras at NAB's booths?, can't they just shoot some footage?, they are working prototypes..

There were no EPIC Dragons on the show floor, and the ones being updated did not get firmware upgrades because it's not done yet.

I rather wait for the pics and moving footage off the Dragon with perfect color science and sensor calibration than some early tests with debayering artifacts. Don't feed the trolls and naysayers, who can't wait to diss the picture quality of Dragon to make themselves feel better.

I can understand that, since Jarred said that they didn't have the ASICs for the new cameras the day NAB opened doors. But what about Blackmagic? they are complaining about the same thing at Blackmagic's forum. Check min. 3:41 and 5:20 on the video below, and you'll see that they are working cameras, both the 4K and the Pocket one.

Still, there is not an answer to my question: Jim had a working Epic Dragon several months ago in Fiji.. Why no footage? , just wonder why..

This is not about to make somebody feel better.. You wouldn't go to the store to buy a refrigerator blindfold, only because someone told you that is very good.. come on now!

There was no indication that the Fiji thread was shot on dragon was there?

In any case, I'm sure we'll see footage soon enough.

I put in an order for 3 Dragon sensor upgrades but didn't pay a dime. I don't have to until my serials are called.

I think it's best to use Ocam's razor with RED: the ASICs just came back and optimizing the color science for 3 - 5 extra stops of dynamic range doesn't happen overnight. It's been 3 years since the MX sensor came out and people are paying close attention to what Dragon is going to look like. When it is shown publicly I want it to look as good as possible so our clients are confident we are shooting with the best camera out there.

I would have loved to see Dragon footage at NAB but the timing just didn't allow for it. Simple as that.
