I was lucky enough to visit the "Justified" set when they were shooting in Burbank the other day. I've watched the show since the first season - not only because I find the story entertaining, but also because I think it has excellent lighting and compelling camera movement.
The show is shot by Francis Kenny, ASC who has done some pretty cool movies over the years - "New Jack City" being one of my favorites.
In any case, when I arrived the sun had just gone down and it had started raining lightly, and I observed that They had lit the scene primarily with some tungsten nine-lights from pretty far back gelled down even warmer to a sodium vapor look.
When I looked at the 24" monitors they were running I was pleasantly surprised by the richness of the mids, the cleanness and beauty in the contrast where the image dropped off to to black, and the clarity with which the actors skin tones came through under such normally "sensor punching" conditions.
Needless to say this firsthand look was mouthwatering and I'm itching to get my own hands on a Dragon to shoot something.
They say good things come to those who wait, and I have to say the wait will be worth it.
Honestly I was kind of skeptical - like "oh yeah it's just a new sensor"
Happy thanksgiving everyone - I'm just reflecting on what a neat week it's been with a belly full of Turkey and Mac n' Cheese.
