  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just in case you missed it - look what they added to DSMC BETA BUILD V5.2.9 -

"Added 4 User Calibration Maps support (Dragon only)"

So you can now hold 4 different black shades internally in the Dragon - and switch (load) between them.

Mark is happy.

What's the time duration to switch between BC's?

What 4 will be the most useful?

All depends what you plan to shoot. If you think you might be fighting sensor temp changes - going + and - 8 degrees is smart since you have about 4/5 degrees swing on sensor temp before you get the yellow warning. Doing a 1/100 will also give you a huge swing in exposure time in addition to a 1/48. (that's from memory as I don't have a camera handy as I'm in hotel at NAB)

I'll hammer on this build after I get back from NAB and try to post more insights / advice next week.

is fantastic this features ;)

i have 4 black now :)

1. 1 second 55c
2. 50 55c
3. 50 70c
4. 100 55 cc

the switch is very fast about 10 second :))

Thanks RED :))))))

Mark,

Could you go into greater detail, perhaps a case study of what it is that you are so happy about?

It's a shame nothing like this is possible for MX.

this is certainly a step in the right direction, the right destination being no need for black shading. I imagine if we go there we will be stopping at a few stations along the way....

My guess is MX doesn't have the internal memory capacity or processing power that the Dragon has. A lot of powerful hardware is installed along with the Dragon sensor.

My guess too Matt. It must be a space limitation thing too. If by making the camera a bit bigger it would be possible to use it as soon as it is turned on I would take that.

also, visually being able to toggle between a and x track (hdr-x) with a button is pretty sweet... i was wondering when this would happen

Now that there is active heating in the Dragon sensor
- it can actively stabilise at a higher temperature (as the sensor likes a little pre-heat) in cooler climates,
- and do so much faster.

4 calibrations is probably a great sweet spot that users can use effectively, whilst covering 90% of their filming needs.
I speculate therefore that the MX would need a number of calibrations to get the same coverage.
As the Dragon sensor is more of a precision tool - maybe having a bang-on calibration is important in getting that extra dB of S/N ratio out of it.
