  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon + Lomo Annie = Vibe

...

I think the Dragon does alright at f/4 48fps under those lighting conditions.

Nice work on some rough footage Les! DV Resolve or RCX?

Those red tail lights just burn out. Noticed that on some other images.

Cheers!

Redcine-X, so no in-depth fixing and correcting, and wasn't really fussing with the colours too much. Thanks for the rough and ready Dragon R3D's though, was still interesting to check out.

Care to share your RMD'S? Would love to have a look at your work

Care to share your RMD'S? ...

There isn't much to see in the RMD's, but I'll show them if you're curious, and as long as people understand my putting them up doesn't mean I think they're good enough to be used as any sort of reference or example of what they themselves should do.

I can't even say these grades are what I myself would have ended up with if I'd taken time to fine tune things, as I actually set out to do some grainy black and white looks like you mentioned, but I started falling asleep and never got that far.

Anyway, to sum up what you can see for yourself in the RMD's - All shots were darkened using 1000ISO -0.233Shadow, with a couple of them also having some Lift/Gamma/Gain adjustments. Colours were RC3/RG3 and adjusted to taste using Kelvin and Tint, with a couple of shots also adjusted using Red/Green/Blue. So it was basically just a matter of pulling down the ISO and adjusting the White Balance, with the Dragon sensor and the RED colour science doing most of the work.

How is possible that the Dragon is still this noisy? It looks absolutely horrible.

Did you read my post above? He shot this at 48FPS 1/100th shutter and at F4 on the lens! You don't shoot 48fps at night without additional lighting... What do you expect shooting at night in available light?! At 24fps, 1/48th, and a 1.4 or 2.0 lens this would look so much better and have far less noise.

Are people seriously not reading posts to understand why it's so noisy?

Quick night test shoot mostly at T4 at 48FPS 1/100th ISO 2000 with a nifty Lomo 35mm Square Front Anamorphic. A bit dark and noisy . . . yup, perfect.

1) Better signal to noise ratios doesn't mean there isn't any noise.

2) Other cameras, for example the F55, have quite a bit of NR built into the early processing stages in camera. The Alexa super-samples internally (in most formats).

It might be worth pointing out that RED made a choice early on to simply put as much image information as possible into the RAW data container without prejudice. This "power" opens the door for some really evocative imagery, as well as an opportunity to destroy - or at least damage - otherwise decent material.

My point is that if you were producing a piece within the framework Zeb was testing, odds are very high that at least some noise reduction would be done during finishing. This leads me to re-defining the issue:

1) With decent/proper lighting conditions is there enough noise to require post NR? If not, then its moot.

2) When the project makes adequate lighting impractical, is the noise objectionable or does it add welcome texture? Beyond that, how well does it respond to post NR? If I know in advance that I can reduce and equalize the noise signature from shot to shot within a reasonable time/cost window and hit QC thresholds then its hardly a show stopper. Might be a very different equation if you're shooting VFX elements/plates.

Cheers - #19

I'll reshoot a couple of these at T2.8 24@240 shutter. Didn't mean to make a fuss. Just trying to find the looks and limits of the new Dragon beast. Love the lens but was warned it's shit soft wide open. If the noise is a major issue when I shoot the sequence for real - I'll just shoot it at 24fps and slow it down in post. Like I said before - for this specific shot I have to do - noise is not a major issue. And this was just a quick location / looks test - not a planned out Dr. Phil Holland lab experiment.

This new sensor reminds me of that classic Children's book: "The Hungry Dragon"
Excerpt:
The Dragon said "feed me more light . . . hungry for light!!" So the fearful villagers brought the Dragon light which he gobbled down and then roared "BRING MORE LIGHT!!" To which the villagers replied: "Ya know Dragon, maybe you need to hit the gym or something. Your appetite is a bit large for us - especially at night. We are just simple small crew villagers trying to make visual art". The Dragon then flamed their peasant asses and flew off toward the "Sun Spot Casino" all you can eat photon buffet and then played the quarter slots.

The End ;-)

Yeah but i've seen dragon footage with that exposure and it didn't look that bad. I looks like the MX. I'll that i'm saying is i've seen better results from the dragon, just surprised.

Played with the footage some more and it not that bad. I think i was surprised more with the noise in the reds in one shot. Maybe DragonColor will remedy the translation.

whats this effect called? see the traffic light and black dots? Also visible on other lights.Redlog seems bit cleaner

i loaded up that file and didnt see any artifacts like that, maybe redownload file/ restart computer and see if its still there?

im on beta 23.3.32713 RCX Pro.Standalone RED PLAYER shows without any problem.Maybe i should go back to Release RCX

I'm on the Beta as well but not having that issue:

WOW. If that was shot at F4 at 48fps, then I think it looks AMAZING. Was there any NR applied? Looks SO GOOD.

Yeah, very small amount of noise reduction.
