  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Lives!

What I meant was, Epic Dragon users can't get in on this unified 5K Dragon-X trade in program.

Does anyone know what the difference between the DSMC2 Dragon 6K (Magnesium) and the DSMC2 Dragon X 5K?
I appreciate there is 1K difference but I'm confused why RED released the Dragon X with the already tried and tested DSMC2 Dragon 6K....

One shoots 6K... other doesn't. :/

The new 5K Dragon is in an updated unified body and I'm guessing cheaper to make than the 6K variant.

Bob, Not sure what you mean by unified body. The links below show both cameras from the same angle and they look the same to me.
Samir, other than the obvious 5k, 6K !!

I'm just a little confused with the simplifying of the new RED lineup.

Hehe. I was just making fun. Anyway so originally DSMC2 6K dragon was DSMC2 (but back then that denoted the body change from DSMC1 think old Epic-MX, Scarlet-MX and Epic Dragon-MX etc.) This was the first iteration of this body change. So it lacks some of the new features kicked off by Helium sensor and on cameras mainly in camera IPP2+33x33 Lut in camera things.

So now this new Dragon-X 5K is in this new "unified DSMC2 body"- the DSMC2 now denotes sped up internals gives you those new things IPP2 in cam etc without the 6K dragon. A reason a few of us are salty. Great if you want to shoot 5K. Like I said still doesn't shoot 6K.

FYI the DSMC2 Dragon 6k Magnesium doesn't have the same sensor block (sensor and protective glass) as other DSMC2 cameras like Helium have.

So for example you can't mount the ABT Speedmount to a Magnesium Dragon camera, this would work with a Helium.

Samir and Patrick, thanks for the feedback.

Even though there have been these "developments" I think I'll stick with what I have...Thanks

Here is a frame from recent work with the Dragon X for those curious.
