  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON in the used marketplace - question

I thought about selling - looking at what I could get to replace it. Then I got back to a project I am working on shot on the Dragon. The images, especially since IPP2 are beautiful. Screw it. I’ll just risk it. I’m not selling. I’m just going to keep on shooting with it until I can’t.

Exactly. I said the the same thing. Just shot this on MG 6k

Looks great, as usual, Bob. Especially on the shadow side of their faces. Just right to stay bright for the scene but with better modeling than you usually see. Nice.

Ah the elusive weapon magnesium camera. Loved mine. It was over-specced for the price, so they killed it! I sold mine right before the price dropped out but also because i'm in an arri market. I haven't missed red since switching at all, but that cam and I shot some great stuff together! Dragon in the the DSMC2 body slays helium. Haven't shot monstro personally. Although I did a Netflix shoot and we had Alexa 65, Venice, and Monstro on drone!

Not to much has changed in the owner operator world. You invest based on how many jobs it will take to recoup, make money after that, rinse and repeat. Regardless of RED's genius marketing 'obsolescence etc...' you've got to be a dummy to think much tech is serviceable beyond 4-5 years. The trade in program was interesting but no better than what most do, use for a few years then sell and buy the latest tech, the numbers pretty much evened out with less headache. It's quite simple.

Sounds good, plan changed on the link I posted :

"At the end of 2019, RED will no longer be able to guarantee service for the products listed in this article. These products are no longer being manufactured, and repair parts are limited, but we will do our best to provide ongoing repairs based on part availability."

Better like this, Thanks guys !

You are wrong. The owner/operator world is just one part of RED's strategy. Atleast I believe so. RED also needs to be making inroads with indie filmmakers who will be future supporters of the brand and its tech ecosystem. RED was founded on a principle that makes your opinion land squarely on the wrong side of the fence. In any case, props to Jarred and RED throwing a lifeline, and more, to those of us who love the Dragon sensor and want to keep the 6K version going. Great to see such responsiveness from the company and this is the kind of thing that will win back goodwill for RED from those of us who LOVED the upstart rebel that woke the industry up.

Just a heads up, but 6k Dragon is alive and well and in a DSMC2 Unified body, no less. A couple days ago Jarred said they're going to enable it on Dragon-X via firmware update before the end of the year (why they didn't just ship it at 6k, your guess is as good as mine).

Also looks like they're going to do a Scarlet-W>Dragon-X 6k upgrade for $5k. And Weapon 6k>Dragon-X 6k crossgrade for $5k.

And they may even decide to do an Scarlet/Epic-Dragon to Dragon-X 6k upgrade but it would be ~$10k (which even Jarred thinks isn't worth it.)

Thanks for spelling all that out for those who may not have been engaged in that other thread! Provides some context for my thanks to Jarred and RED. Sometimes I assume everyone's reading everything on the forum which is obvi not true. No one has that kind of time. :)

Automotive technology also changes pretty rapidly these days with all the technology options but all the OEM's support their product lines for 10 years due to the size of the investment. I'm predicting a mass exodus here. Bye Bye RED!

Eh. Did the EPIC Dragon to Dragon-X upgrade offer go away? I was hoping to do it, but strapped for cash at the moment. Since this is just a trade-in I don't see why this offer needs to be taken away. I also have an EPIC-W that needs a board upgrade to DSMC2 Helium... will that go away too? I'm not a happy camper at the moment, as this really starts to mess with any ability to plan. Not everyone is flush with cash to spend on upgrades. Hope I'm wrong about the upgrade path going away and it's just a site tech issue.

I don't think they did it in the end. Jarred didn't seem confident because the trade-in cost would've been ~$10k (and a new one is $15k). Better off selling and buying new.

Mike, it was there. I looked at it several times as I tried to figure out how/what I was going to do. I was even contacted by RED folks about it. Just didn't realize it'd go away. I suppose I can sell it and buy new etc.

Worst case, I'm really hoping RED allows us to be able to plan better by communicating this better, or staying really flexible with trade-in upgrades like this one was. If anything this is an ask along those lines.

And best case, that option is added back in on the site, and was hopefully just a technical glitch.
