  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi!

It seems the Dragon camera got better hardware than the Epic-X as well, besides just the sensor upgrade. Now Dragon supports several calibration maps, for example, when Epic-X cannot. More memory means better capabilities.

A feature that most people would love - and they have asked for it - is the capability to load 3D LUTs in-camera. Set the gamma to RedLogFilm and apply a 3D LUT on top, and monitor accordingly (including on the Touch LCD, EVF, second monitor etc).

Jarred, Graeme - is it possible to implement down the road?

That would be great. I am hearing a TON of people asking for this feature, to be honest.

Jarred & Graeme are very aware of the fact that many of us want, and NEED this BADLY.

All I can say is that I left NAB 2014 more optimistic about RED's future I have EVER been. Including 2007, when they shipped that RED ONE - which was damn exciting at the time :)

I've said it before and I will say it again - as soon as we can load a 3D display LUT via wifi into the camera and also have the ability to LIVE GRADE a CDL file on an independent monitor path with a tablet or iPhone ... well ... shit's gonna get wild real fast for RED.

One of the neat things about this, is they could easily write a CDL sidecar just like RCX makes RMD sidecars. Once that filters down through the SDK, you've got CDL's being created on set, and instantly synced and seen anywhere that the raw R3Ds are used. No need for any dailies processing in order to see the CDL.

Given that the whole "wireless" and "tablet/phone" portion of your desire just got a whole lot easier and open, and given that by now, many are used to how RMDs work and the specific structure of the RDC folders, well, there aren't that many pieces of this puzzle left unseen.

Not only a sidecar file - you can also write a CDL flag (true/false) into the meta-data header of the actual R3D and if it is a CDL graded image in camera - gamma switches to a locked off version of REDlogfilm (ISO, FLUT & WB) - and then you just put the Slope, Offset, Power, and Saturation values right into the actual R3D - (in addition to creating a sidecar if wanted) - and then ANY app that uses the SDK would know what to do - and it would be ... the future.
 
Very important indeed. Pretty soon there will be workshops held for dutch DoP's to learn how to implement LUT's and CDL support for Alexa and F55/F5. It would be great to add the Dragon to that workshop as well .
 
Resolve 10 has live grading. You can spend about $300 on Blackmagic mini capture/playback devices via thunderbolt and the FREE app and send your HDSDI signal through resolve for live grades on your laptop and output to a proper monitor. Yeah I know it's not in camera LUTs but it works.

I've been wanting/asking for wireless sending of live color metadata (INLUDING LIFT GAMMA GAIN!) from RCX to the camera for several years....
 
Livegrade through Blackmagic HDLink works great...but I hate being tethered and needing a computer, etc. when I imagine having this capability built into the camera with an iPad/ iphone I get all giddy inside :)
 
yeah,

1) LUTs support in-cam!!!!!

2) LUTs support in RCX Pro (import/preview + generation/export)

3) WIRELESS SYNC with DSMC body using REDLINK
 
Any word from RED? Is this possible?

It's pretty clear the overwhelming majority of users/owners would LOVE this feature in camera.
