  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi All

Can any owners confirm current maximum framerate/ resolutions on Dragon on it's current firmware?

Just wondering if there was any increase over MX yet.

So those rates are the same as MX - I was wondering if we had gained anything faster in recent Dragon firmware as per the original specs when announced.

Can anyone confirm that?

I had thought the readout time of the sensor had increased and we'd see an increase proportional to that.

I am confidant that there was a suggestion that there would be slightly more bandwidth to play with... New board etc.

It would great if we don't lose fps for a given imaging plane size (not pixel size)... I like shooting 16.9 s35 with my lenses. With a MX Epic that is roughly achieved with 2:1 5k and chopping of the sides to 16:9 (a fit to height achieves this). Now that we can use 5k HD for s35 width and a 16:9 frame (which is fantastic and less fussy) it will actually mean less fame rate options. So if RED can squeeze a little bit more out to compensate I would be delighted!

Icing on the cake would be a burst mode, and would help attract more people to the camera for reasons in addition to the current improvements. I know there has been user speculation if it is possible or not, but I don't know if RED has ever commented on the subject...

I can't believe this to be the case... it would little better than marketing trickery of the type I don't think Red would do. If using WS without saying so you may as well create 5 by 1 image and claim 300fps for 6k

Hopefully this will get straightened out with later builds it is after all really early days.

This is not new. The R1 and EPIC also supported the highest frame rates in WS mode. WS mode is their 2.39:1 (or 2.40:1) aspect ratio. At one point I recall Jim saying the maximum frame rate was based on the vertical pixel count.

You can see the complete list of frame rates in the operations guide starting on page 52.

Of course the 'max frame rate is based on vertical height... This was explained patiently by the red team a number of times. It is also the source of my 5 by 1 comment... Since the early spec mentioned FULL frame and the chip is a 1.9to1 any frame rate marketing that notes frame rates without a WS prefix is obviously going to suggest full frame??

Any news from Nab about this...

I really would appreciate a tiny bump in current dragon frame rates to make the frame size (not pixels count) frame rate as fast as the epic MX... (And if possible a little more)... I don't want to have lost 'anything' with my dragons.

Ps not to be too pushy but I would love to see the 120fps @ full 5k that was once advertised... I do appreciate this may have been a slip of keyboard :-(
 
also another way to look at it is the Alexa can record 120fps at S35 frame size so if the Dragon could do 120fps at 16:9 or Full height 5k this would be fantastic!

PS the Amira has a full frame 200fps capacity and I feel the basic dragon (the one availble now) would be wonderfull if it could shoot 200fps at 3k to compete? or if that is not possible 200fps @ 16:9 2.5k (S16 frame size)...
