  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Feedback

The Dragon can handle significantly more light and does burn out a lot more beautiful than... well anything.

The colors are fatter and more vibrant, and it seems like the dragon sensor response to colors closer to our eyes.

you can have a lot less noise if you want it.

Yes, I can see the difference when I put them side by side. The difference becomes huge when you go to post.

Question: Does the Dragon look better? Can you see a difference without extreme pixel peeping?

Answer - YES! The extra latitude really shows up with outdoor contrast and gives even more control on your processing in post.

There are several comparisons on this forums available for download now....you should check it out....
better is subjective and is obviously also related to the price of the upgrade....

Play with the R3D's yourself to get a better idea but... I took the MX and Dragon samples from Luigi, and in RCX pro matched the blacks, mids, and highs with a curve only to show a bit of the difference between the two. You can push Dragon further on both ends, but for the comparisons I'm matching histogram levels. You can see right away that the Dragon image has more apparent "brightness" at the same exposure while having more dynamic range on both ends, better color rendition, less noise, and better visual sharpness. Pay close attention to the highlights and the shadow areas. The color charts are also very telling.

Luigi exposed these shots identically for both cameras to help show the differences.

Again, you can push the Dragon further than MX, so play with the files and you should notice right away. These don't really do the Dragon justice since I'm holding back by matching them to the MX histogram levels.

Also keep in mind if you plan on renting your camera out, most people only want the new thing. Dragons are flying off the shelves right now and I don't see anyone renting MX bodies anymore. Once Dragons become more common, I don't see MX cameras being rented at all... So that's another factor to take into account in regards to upgrading.

There is an attempt at fixing these threads and discussions here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...Dragon-Vs-Alexa-Sony-threads-are-belong-to-us

There are additional info here:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?109981-OFFHOLLYWOOD-DRAGON-R3Ds-amp-MORE

Luigi did a few cool things here:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?111443-quot-simple-and-ridiculous-quot-dragon-vs-Mx-test

And here are some comparisons:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?109565-Dragon-Epic-comparison

I have a few additional comparative things, but I think "new" info will come when the new OLPF and color-science is out.
These sum up todays status pretty well.

Exactly what Gunleik said +1

And reinforcing... When you dig around and grade the two side by side in post, that's when you start to see a major seriously fantastic benefits.

I don't rate side by side tests, only because your looking at a basic factory lut , so of corse they will look similar. You cannot see whats actually deep within the file. it's just amazing to grade with.
So much so that I have 2 EPIC MX's sitting in boxes that I doubt I'll use again until they are upgraded. The over difference between MX and DRAGON is to much for me to go backwards.

All I can add is that coming from years of Medium Photography, this is the first time that I have Pulled Frames form a Motion camera that truly is as close to that fill of richness and organic nature in its colors and texture... And I absolutely love it... Dragon al the way... And with the new OLPF+Dragon Color Science coming soon it will get only BETTER... ;)
