  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON debayer options - Red Rocket-X hardware versus RCX-P software only

Software still better quality. Speed better on most machines (assuming 1X Titan video card) at 1/4 for off-line files without rocketX.

What differences did you note between decodes of Dragon footy on RR-X vs software?

The original Rocket was, IMO, always a bit underpowered so some rounding was likely used to achieve real time performance. The RR-X, OTOH, has been touted as a proper beast for the challenge. The last report on RU suggested that the RR-X hardware was still operating at partial capacity, not sure how far along they are in September of 2014. The RR-X has not enabled video output yet either. Perhaps even a robust hardware solution will still need to trade some precision for speed, or maybe that will change once the boards are all optimized and engaged.

FWIW, the RR-X decoded Dragon footy looks better than any MX footy I have ever reviewed - including software decoded finals.

Is the Red Rocket working with the Dragon .r3d? or it only works with the RedRocket-X?

Is the Red Rocket going to work with the Dragon footage in the near future? or do i have to sell it? ...and buy a titan card.

Rocket-X suffers from the same sharpening errors as the original rocket, see HERE

Rocket-X is good if your trying to use a laptop for dailies, but I would never use it for final renders, and specially not for VFX hand offs.

and you cant even really use it for a preview with Resolve if your intention is to do final renders with a GPU, the artificial sharpening on the rocket-x effects your keys and you'd have to re-adjust everything when switching to gpu.

GPU (nvidia, never tested amd) renders are identical to CPU , Rocket-X/Rocket not so great.

Thanks for the feedback Christopher. I really was hoping the RR-X would have enough muscle to match the software decodes. If it's losing the precision game to general purpose GPUs as well that's pretty disappointing for a $6,750 one trick pony card.

Hopefully, as Rob and his team get the firmware/etc sorted, the RR-X will fulfill it's role as both a precision full decode board that can match other options as well as drive UHD/4K monitors at 10bpc…

lets really hope so... would love to get everything out of the Rocket X, including using it in Resolve for Grading and Final Render with no compromises :)
