  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON changed framerate while I was shooting (I didn't ask it to)

I shot a concert this past weekend, and my SCARLET DRAGON did something very unexpected. About 22 minutes into the clip, the speed inexplicably changes from 24fps to something like 12fps. I was using GENLOCK and I noticed that the SYNC and GEN lights had gone red, but I presumed that it was just a sync problem that the camera would override. I have no idea whether the genlock suddenly dropped it from a good speed to a bad one, or if something else went sideways. But it ruined about 10 minutes of footage. At a break I stopped recording, restarted, and GENLOCK was green the rest of the evening. I had no idea I had bad footage until the show was over and I reviewed it.

I'm running the latest released RED firmware, which I believe is 5.3.29.

Has anybody ever seen anything like this happen?

Is it possible you somehow triggered the Ramp button? Maybe it got configured to a button and the button got bumped?

Very unlikely. I'm running a very stock setup (no special button assignments), and looking at the default key assignments, I'm guessing there's no way that happened.

Also, for what it's worth, the audio recording continued as per normal while the video was (mostly) dropping every other frame. That is to say, the audio recorded with the video agrees with the audio feed recorded separately by the sound engineer. But once the video starts dropping every other frame (roughly), the audio sync is obviously lost in fact. But it didn't stop recording audio the way it would have in the case of Varispeed.

REDMAG SSD issue??

Maybe not being able to sustain the datarate for some reason??

Again, unlikely. I have MINIMAGs which I have used at 6KFF 4:1 REDCODE w/o error. I was shooting 8:1 REDCODE, so tons of headroom. Also, if the mag cannot keep up, I'd expect an error message, not an unasked-for adaptation of frame rate.

There was a sync issue with Epics a while ago - around the time Philip Bloom had his. I think it was a specific sync box issue.

What was your external TC source - and did you connect via a lock-it or similar?

This might help - http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/19567-how-to-genlock-red-epic/ - I know it's Epic, but should still be relevant.

Video REF comes from an AJA FS-1 to a video distribution amplifier. All cameras are on AC voltage (no batteries). I'm not sync'd to external timecode...just video black. Normally I shoot the length of a set (~ 45 minutes) so very important to keep cameras consistent over long takes.

Just to update this thread I started: the bad video frames seemed to be exactly every other frame while shooting video. In the edit, I just doubled-up the frames and somehow made it work:

You can see the "effect" at 1:42.
