Hello, I have been testing the Dragon for a music video i am planning to shoot on anamorphic lenses.
I have read a thread that reads to get a proper 2.4. desqueezed anamorphic frame you need to drop down to 4K FF 5:4 and do the desqueeze from that resolution.

My question is. What would be pixel crop if you would shoot 6K 2:1 and crop in post ?

Assuming your anamorphic lens fills all of the 6K 2:1 area with an image (or at least vertically since that's what ultimately matters), since it has a 2X horizontal squeeze, if you want a final unsqueezed 2.40 : 1 image, that means you will be using a 1.20 : 1 area of the sensor.

6K 2:1 is 6144 x 3072, but you know you'll have to crop the sides to get down to a 1.20 : 1 area; your vertical dimension remains 3072, so just multiply that by 1.2X, which gets you 3686.4. So you'd be cropping 6144 to 3686 or 3687, ending up with a 1.20 : 1 image that has a 2X horizontal squeeze. At that point, it's your choice how to get rid of the squeeze, either by rescaling the horizontal or vertical dimensions by twice or half.

Thank you David,
I am obviously not as sharp in the maths department so this information is very useful.

Tommaso, I have been testing on the Epic Dragon. I am a bit ashamed to admit that I have simply not seen that option. I saw a thread stating the same problem and thought this was an ultimatum when it comes to shooting on the Epic Dragon. I do not have alot of experience when it comes to Red cameras, the Arri is king here in Iceland and most of Europe.

So i guess the 6K 1.2 frame will give me the 2.4 desqueezed image ?

Many thanks again David and Tommaso for the reply.

Yes, and with the added bonus to crop the sides "at the source" so the bandwidth is used toward the 2.4:1 crop entirely.

You can more efficiently use the datarate and have a lower compression ratio this way.

Very useful.

Many thanks again David and Tommaso for the reply.

Happy to help! ;)
