  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DR ..a good discussion!!

It appears not. Funny how the overall brightness changed when the only thing you did was change the lighting ratio but with the same "brightness" level in the phone.

I actually did. I went up on screen brightness and down on the wall.

There's a small window where I can really provoke the smear. Maybe that's why some of us see it more than others?

Alright then Aaron. Sorry for making that statement. I see now what you were trying to do

Some low-res crops from Luigi's Gemini shots -

The subject could be shot and graded to look 'nicer', but I also like the more gritty look it enables too.

Les,

I never could get that particular scene to look the way I wanted it to. You gave it a nice look and feel.

Thanks Rand. The beautiful subject-matter, Gemini sensor and RED colour-science are a nice combination. For me, that frame is also a good reminder of how important it is to shoot for a particular look, with the aim of enhancing (rather than fixing or changing) that look in post.

What's very interesting about all these tests of the new Red sensors (Gemini and Monstro) is that there isn't a particularly noticeable improvement in the highlights compared to the Dragon, even with the IPP2 highlight extension algorithm. The shadows on the other hand have been improved dramatically, the noise floor is so low it's impressive, but it remains to be seen how well these new chips, especially Monstro, will stack up next to the Alexa LF, in terms of popularity at least. The Alev III chip in all its different sizes is still considered the "gold standard" of the industry and there's definitely a Mini LF on the way too, at some point, so it still looks like it will be an uphill battle for Monstro to win the hearts of many DP's even with its impressive color fidelity, shadows and resolution. Maybe the DXL 2 will have an easier time given its extra features and form factor, regardless, I think Red desperately needs a chip that can bring a massive improvement in the highlights if they wish to remain in the game in the coming years. The DSMC 2 bodies will probably still be around in 2020 so there's every possibility we'll see yet another sensor after Monstro for the Weapon. As far as Helium goes I've yet to see a test confirming its ability to capture 16 stops of range, even with its clean shadows. On Dragon you could.....if you could tolerate extreme noise that is!

Hi Reddy, thanks for the Gemini highlight test shots.

Looks good to me -

Looks like you've uploaded one of the shots twice though (the ISO 800 3 stops over frame is missing).

Same shots, pushing the highlights towards clipping -

And pulling the overall exposure down -

Weird to call it 4 stops over at iso1600. That's gonna confuse people. Just call it 3 stops over at iso800...

Might as well just say whoa this camera can recover a 10 stop overexposure at iso50000 :P

I wasn't paying much attention to the numbers, but looking at it again more closely, it could be said closing down to f/8 was underexposing a little bit anyway. Which would also mean the f/2 shot is only 3-4 stops over (with the ideal exposure being at f/8-f/5.6).

Still a good example though of what the Gemini in Standard Mode (and with the LLO OLPF) can do in a real world scenario, imo.

Hi Noah,
The incident sunlight reading on my spectra was T8 @800 iso. I exposed at T8 with the shadows reading at T4. The +4 stops one was exposed at T2, both at the 800 iso and the 1600 iso. I set my Gemini @1600 and compensated the one stop increase by cutting my shutter angle to 90 so as to maintain the T8 sunlight reading. I wanted to see how the Gemini reacts to this over exposure at both 800 and 1600 settings. The camera had to leave to the airport for a shoot, wish I could have started my base exposure for the shadows at T4. I have done the same with a Helium as well. The Helium at 800 and +4stops over exposure fares worse in highlights in comparison to the Gemini.
