  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DR ..a good discussion!!

Redid this one from scratch. Really love the lighting ratios in this. (Grain added)

With Gemini the images looks more real, especially than our MX. I can still see a bit of the pink tint though in it even after it has been graded.

Luigi,

Hope you get a chance to test the Monstro as you did the others and compare. Curious as to the low light capability as compared to Gemini. I have found my Monstro to be exceptionally good in low light/higher ISO. It is an incredibly versatile camera.

The detail...

Details remind of my old days when I shot medium format photography with my Hassy V and 40MP digital back. Stunning.
This was the reason I bought into Helium 8K.
Resolution matters ...

Luigi,
Thanks a lot for all your effort in doing this and sharing with us your results, which everyone appreciates. It also helps those who are on the fence whether to up/downgrade.

Looking at the Gemini files, I am not sure what to think really. Although, it clearly shows Gemini's LL strengths, and how you can push the files in both direction without it breaking apart easily, without lighting, shaping and controlling, images will still not look very flattering. Some images are slightly magenta, and some slightly greenish. Nothing you cannot get rid of in post. But ...
For documentary type of work or project with minimal crew and lighting, Gemini is great. But honestly, I am not over the moon - not yet. I have to see more :-)

I think comparison shots between different cameras of the same scene with the same camera settings would tell us more. But no rush, when you have the time my friend :-)

Nevertheless, mille grazie and enjoy shooting with your new babes :-)

ehehe thanks for the compliments of the glasses ehehe;)
ok out of work now, I did these shoot .... I realized that I have not done the blacks in standard mode on Gemini, while for the low light yes, I apologize.
Zoom Zeiss all at T3
Gemini in 5k, standard and low light, Monstro 5k and 8k and 8k with the same framework of 5k.
Well what to say, Gemini (apart from the calibration not made) really remains something special for the price. I would say the King in low light.
Monstro is surprising in the resolution but also very high performance in low light and for me it has more latitude DR, this and what I see on the chart Zylia finally exceeds ALEXA and Gemini , about 0.5 stop.
Monstro have that sweetness in the image, I believe due to the high resolution.
But these are extreme cases of low light external, what interests me now is to see when there is controlled light on the set and the skin tones.
I have added DPX ALEXA LOG-c. 800 iso.

Luigi,
Can you clarify the shooting mode (low light or normal) for Gemini, and the lenses and T-stops for each of these shots? Thanks!

Gemini at 5kuhd t-stop T3 : Standard mode and low light mode
Monstro at 5kuhd t-stop T3 : standard mode
Monstro at 8k uhd t-stop T3 : standard mode
Monstro at 8k uhd zoomed (same image of 5k) t-stop T3 : standard mode.
Alexa 2.8k upscaled to 4k uhd at 800 iso Dpx grab

Thai, these shots are in shit light conditions! as well as low intensity.
No camera comes out unscathed, all will have their own dominant color, especially if you do not use the same lens.
What you are looking for must be done with the same lens at the same distance and with the same light, ALexa, REd, SOny, Panasonic etc. In this way you will be able to choose the one you like best, or that you think is better.
Upcoming shots shoot them under controlled quality light;)

if you come to lugano let me know;)

Left The "Green" in Fuck it!, Slightly more info in the darkness lesser noise.

I know, Luigi. And I think it was good you did those shots!

People are screaming for Gemini as THE hot camera for low light and think you can just grab the camera go out and shoot run gun one man band and get good results. But as I tried to expain in other threads here, if you don‘t controll and shape your light, even with the best LL camera, it will look shitty. Even in some daylight shots you did under not ideal available lighting conditions (overcast day), images are flat. Again, nothing against your tests. In contrary, I am happy you did them.

So really looking for upcoming test in controlled lighting condition. It would be great to do these tests outdoor. But this requires even more time and crew to do so, I know.

For me it is clear, after seeing your results. Monstro is still KING. It has everything, DR, resolution and LL capability. Well it better has to be. Costs 3x more.
Still curious about Helium vs Gemini, though.

Anyway, thanks so much for everything!

ehehe yes I'm waiting for the sun with the spring but it seems to delay eheh:crazy:
Yes, your thought is correct.
Light is and remains the very important thing in our work.
But you know I've always worked with DP young or older people, where for them it is very important to give a photographic impression and then stand out for this, giving a value to their project.
By now they know both the weaknesses of ALexa and RED, the same goes for my colorist that I have never seen or heard complaining but with one and only purpose to make the customer happy. This is professionalism.
These are just tests with relative importance.
To return to the speech, Gemini has a boost of 2 stops of light, where they can be used to use Zoom with a slow aperture, or to give more depth of field without increasing light on the set, etc. etc. this with a click on the touch screen, for me this is a nice goal. Obviously you do not have a resolution of 8k and therefore limited in this. But you have smaller and more manageable files. Difficult as a choice and certainly remains a personal choice or in the production area.
Monstro for how I can see him in these hours is much more particular with more nuances and refinement in the image, what to have Alexa, but with a different character, as right it is. Only fear on Monstro is the factor 8k difficult to manage in post-production in real time be quite heavy ...
But we will see ehehhe
