  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DR ..a good discussion!!

I gotta get my hands on the Gemini, my goodness I am loving what I am seeing

Both Gemini shots look 1/3 stop brighter. Colors are also more green in the Gemini shots. I wonder which is closer to real life colors?

Is this due to the color matching? How did you process your footage?

Pat, simply using Premiere applying Ipp2 lut. I think the conversion is the brightest 1/3 factor.
In this situation I prefer Gemini that ALexa, is more real.

Luigi, what do you think of the colors compared to the Helium and the others?
Luving these tests btw Luigi. Checking in a few times a day to see if any new are here :)

Andy I always preferred Mx and Dragon DMsc2, these were the best RED sensors for me. Now there is Gemini and I also think Monstro (Monday arrive and try;).
Helium ... he never convinced me seriously. I do not know maybe I was in love with Dragon heheh too :)
Anyway, this Gemini makes you say WOW that beautiful image pleasing to the eye, I hope you understand me, beautiful color separation, has no resolution like Helium but be very close to DRagon 6k, but the softer high lights and no noise even with low light, and the double nativity believe me is worth all the price. Really and no joke is a great investment right now.
I'm just curious to put next to Monstro now and if I can find a Helium do the test with ALL ;)
let's see how the market takes it;)
In my opinion we will see many scarlet-w for sale and Epic-w helium to go on Gemini and whoever has more money will take Monstro for the sensor size AND resolution.

Here are some of your images corrected Luigi.

It is interesting that you prefer MX. Prefer over what exactly?
Never liked MX. You need to tweak a lot in post to get nice skin tone. Dragon Dsmc2 definitely made it.
But it is Helium AND IPP2 that changed everything, at least for me. You get the resolution and nice natural color straight out of camera. IPP2 saved us tons of time in post.
So I don‘t understand why Helium is so hated.

Gemini certainly has all the bells and whistles and the price is spot on.
HOWEVER, the only downsize I see at the moment is when shooting 2x anamorphic. You have to go down to 4K 4:3 (11MP) vs 6K 4:3 (25MP) in Helium but only get 10% wider FOV.

Maybe I come down to Lugano with my Helium and we can run some tests and drink good italian wine :-)

It's a difficult matter, I think it's a matter of personal feelings. The whole IPP2 process has now really done a great job.
If you want to go down one day let me know, if I'm free from work we do something together for the Reduser community;) you're always welcome;)

Definitely. For Dragon owners it is easy. For Helium decision is tougher. So it really depends what you shoot mostly.
Wish Red could bring out Dsmc3 where users can swap sensor by themselves.

Certo, will do so when I plan a trip to Lugano.

E mille grazie!

Isn't the Gemini images really quite pink?
I tested grading a bit but thought it was quite hard to get rid of. It is probably not so hard when you get the hang of it.

I'm amaized about the DR of Gemini...

12800 iso

50 iso

Yes Pat is awesome.
Today I had a few minutes to play and understand the Gemini DR.
I extracted the maximum using a bit of Denoise, test based only on the luminance , ALEXA and Gemini, still surprised Gemini have more detail in the blacks and as you see the gap is closed ... indeed no because in a normal situation Gemini will be less noisy when we are in the absence of light ...
Tomorrow or later Monstro arrives, and we see;)

This camera just checks all the boxes for me....

Is the scarlet-w even worth the investment at this stage with this camera being the immediate upgrade for it?

Michael, honestly? if you have a financial possibility, go to Gemini without a shadow of a doubt.
Scarlet-w for me to have been a great workhorse during this year, to be the only one in which my investment returned in a few months.
But as I said with the arrival of Gemini, but especially the double nativity iso opens many doors, think only of the documentary department where you shoot a lot and in any situation of light this Gemini will make a lot of difference.
This baby is amazing.

Hi Luigi, thanks for your response.

The financial possibility is exactly the problem, being as such this is my first RED. So with the purchase I need all the accompanying accessories and kit (gimbal, lights, etc).

I shoot many Documentary videos in third world countries. I really wish to make the GEMINI purchase but I need to figure out if going Scarlet would make more sense in my situation.

In the end, I will have a full Scarlet-W load out at $15k all in...

With Gemini,

I will be at $30k all in...

Thanks for your time.
