  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DR ..a good discussion!!

Hey Luigi, hats off for the good will and effort.
Few suggestions for testing with Gemini.

8 shots, 4 different exposures x 2 exposure priorities:

- based on ISO 800 rating, standard mode
- based on ISO 1600 rating, standard mode
- based on ISO 3200 rating, standard mode
- based on ISO 3200 rating, LL mode.

Exposure priority 1 - for the mids, highlights as turn out
Exposure priority 2 - for highlights, ETTR to prevent clip

Also - rolling shutter test on 35mm, 50mm and 85 mm pans.

+1 Those shots could change my mind regarding the upgrade. (I wanted to stay with Dragon).
The only thing I still cannot get my head around is why Red value EpicW Helium price 5K higher than Gemini.
Resolution over DR and LL? Or is it pure strategic/marketing purpose?
Maybe someone from Red can share some intel.

Perhaps the R&D cost is allready covered?
And it's probably more diffictult for RED to sell a lower res sensor?...
5k for 5k is attractive. (Another film stock option)

Seeing all the hype here on RU, looks like people favor LL (and probably more DR) than resolution.

Fantastic job Luigi!
I don't quite understand what you write here: "ALEXA/ GEMINI SHOT AT T5.6 AND DOWN 5 STOP TO T22 90 GRAD. " Do you mean that you underexposed with 5 stops, or?

Best wishes,
Andreas

I think to some degree it is also because Gemini is new and shiny and then there is always excitment. I'm sure the 8k are more expensive to produce.
For me Gemini is interesting because we nearly always shot in 100fps and often when it is darker, but I have not made my mind up yet. It also helps that it is half the price of a Weapon Helium 8k. If they cost the same I think I would get a Weapon 8K.

Second set was shot at iso 3200. so you need to close iris and pump up shutter speed if you want to keep same exposure level.
I assume Luigi did not use NDs.

Wow so Gemini has within 1/3 stop of the highlights of Alexa and noticeably cleaner more detailed shadows AND more resolution and a bigger sensor. AND LL mode to boost sensitivity 2 stops. At half the price. RED might finally end up on top. Also exciting is that the low noise will likely make redcode much more efficient and less likely to destroy shadow detail.

More highlights than Dragon, a lot more than Helium, AND cleaner shadows than both?! And that's just in standard mode!

After seeing Luigi result against Alexa, Gemini is tempting.
But I still think for Helium owners it makes more sense to wait and go Monstro or larger format or whatever Red will release next. The way how tech is moving, it wouldn‘t be too long.

I have found a way to work with Helium and get fantastic results.

exact Noha,
we are just a breath from the high lights of ALEXA but in the shadows Gemini is better. Watching the bulb test Gemini's highlights are very soft. Basically from what I see with my ALexa the DR is practically the same even working in Davinci I get something more for gemini out of the shadows.
But then when I change to Low light, ALexa is destroyed by Gemini. Crazy to struggle to believe !! but being reality. Monday Monstro arrives and I'm curious to see eheheheh
Not having Helium with me, but I turned motlo next to Dragon and Dragon was noisier in the shadows but had about a 1/2 to 1 stop of difference in the highlights where DRagon was better. I should try.

Sorry I don't get what you say here. "motlo"?

ehehe sorry
Not having Helium with me, but I've shot many times in side by side documentaries at Dragon, and Dragon was noisier in the shadows but had about a 1/2 to 1 stop of difference in the highlights where DRagon was better. I should try.

I shot this at home quickly in ALEXA prores and Gemini 1080 p 25, I made a single file to download.
1 shot ALEXA 800 ISO T4.0, 2 shot ALEXA 3200 ISO T4.0, 3 shot Gemini 800 ISO T4.0, 4 shot Gemini Low light mode 3200 ISO T4.0. Log-c alexa / rwg-log310 Red.

Gemini is Crazy Guys :)
