Hey guys, I'm not a fcp guy, but I'm planning on doing a retransfer of my red footage to dpx files in redcine in order to reconform my timeline in after effects, and output for a color pass in color.
The issue I am having is that I know nothing about dpx files. Isn't dpx the same as cineon which is a 4:3 aspect ratio? how does it handle 16x9 footage? Any thoughts as to what the optimum settings are to output from redcine? Any help would be appreciated.

On a side note... Is it possible making a dpx file from an uncompressed hd quicktime? If I did that would it be losing any information/resolution? My final output will be hdcam. If I could simply render out a dpx file from my uncompressed hd timeline, it would make my life much easier. Thanks in advance.

*edit* I think I found an answer to my second question in that if I make a dpx from the hd file, all the damage is already done to the picture(ie whites are clipped, and blacks are crushed) so even if I made a dpx from the hd file, the damage is already done in the conversion to hd. Does that sound correct?.

Hi.

A couple of issues/answers.

1. DPXs can have whatever aspect/size you specify in clipfinder/redcine/whatever.
2. If you plan to CC from them, you should output some kind of log version with as little noise as possible for a start. Redlog is often a good startingpoint @ 5,5k/320 ISO/-0,4 exposure. See to that you do NOT crush your blacks and if the DR of the image isn't full, use brightnes/contrast to place the image "up in the histogram" and spread it a bit, NOT the exposure drawer.
3. Even in build 20 +, you risk blowing the RED channel, underexposing the blue channel under development if you set the colortemperature too far off from the 5000k mark. Generally, try to avoid that.
4. FCP doesn't read DPXs. You can re-connect to the DPXs in color via an EDL
5. You would like to use Clipfinder or Monkey Extract or Crimson for something like this...

Do tests

Have fun

Thank you Gunleik, I appreciate the response.
Geez, I'm already overwhelmed just reading that explanation. :biggrin5:

Ugh, final cut doesn't read dpx's. That's not good news. I guess that's gonna kill my workflow, not to mention your suggestion of clipfinder, monkey extract, or crimson is not in my budget, so I guess I'll have to try for another way to make this work. Is this the same workflow with tiff's and targa's? does final cut work with either of those sequences? Do you need clipfinder, monkey extract, or crimson to work with those files as well?

I just wish there wasn't a problem with final cut and color using uncompressed hd quicktimes. This is proving to be a pain in the ass.

Clipfinder is a free conform tool and you use RedAlert for the corrections.

You can download it here and there's a lot of documentation here at reduser.

http://www.daun.ch/software/

You could render AJA 10-bit LOG which is almost like grading DPX's.

You have to download the codec from AJA.com

Or you could grade directly in Color from the RAW files, which probably is the easiest way to a good result, even if the DPX/AJA thingy can get you a better result, but it's more timeconsuming.

Here is a very good alternative:

... Given that you're on FCS3/Color 1.5

Cheers!

Unfortunatly I'm on a pc working with cs4, so I can't use clipfinder.

So let me ask, do you think I could download the aja codec on my pc, then export from after effects in this codec? I know you may not know the answer, but figured I'd ask.

As far as I know, my color grader works on fcs2 with a kona3 card. What I want is to output a file in order to bring it into color for CC.

That sounds like a good idea.

Start off with the export settings I suggested, though.

But, you're right. I'm not sure if you can export the AJA codec from RC on a PC.

You'll have to install it and see...

Use the log-codec for log exports

Thanks Gunleik, it's been a month or two of fighting this technology, and I'm at the point where I might just give up and color correct the uncompressed hd time line that I have, and tweak for the gamma shift when I go back to FCP.

If you can export an edl, you can open that in FCP, re-conform to the RAW files and correct from them, or do the developing of the raw files on the mac.

I would hope that your online dude is on snow-leopard...

ah...

You said FCS2...

Then RAW grading in color is simpy not a good idea...
It's better in FCS3/SnowLeopard.

What is your destination?
DCP? TV? Web? HD? SD?

final destination is probably dbeta, and hdcam tape. It's a short film, so it will be digitally projected, and screened on dvd. The reason I can't correct from the raw files is that The hd files were transferred to hd in redcine as one large file per brick, and the timecode won't match for a reconform.
