  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

downloading Looks

As far as I know you don't need specific looks to shoot with this camera.

The common practice using RED RAW is to care about exposing correctly while shooting and then create your desired look in post.

Some shooters prefer to create a quick look on set, after downloading tha data from the cards, and use it as a basic reference during final grade.

After all, cinematography is about creating a unique optical atmoshpere...
I can't imagine why one would want to shoot a film using e.g. Gordon Willis' "look" from the Godfather or even the cold look from the Matrix.

If you want a similar look, use your skills and create a similar one.

The reason I asked is because we have a shoot coming up and I'd like to show the client different looks/examples before we start shooting.
I don't intend to shoot with a particular look in camera, but since we just got it and the shoot is in 2 days, it would have been great to upload different looks and try them on set.
thanks for the replies.

It doesn't quite work that way with Red. There is no 'painting' in camera like with HD. Red is more similar to shooting film.

Red does not apply anything whatsoever to the raw sensor data - this is all done during post production, specifically in a color grading session. When you shoot, even though you've set your 'ASA', the only thing that is affected is monitoring. Exposure will be affected because of either metering or what you see in-monitor, but nothing from the ASA or LUT (rec709, Redspace, etc...) will actually be applied to the actual raw sensore data.

What you can do is some quick on-set grading in Scratch (I provide that service) or RedCine/RedAlert to show your client what options exist. You can also show other people's work that illustrates what can be done with Red footage in post.

i just shot 3 spots and the look i came up with on set was lost when i saw the rough cut. it looked flat and the color blah. how do i get that look (that the client loved) to the editor so when i/we see the footage it dosent look like sh--? it dident seem that the editor knew how to color correct?! So i came in and did a color correct but im usto film and having the timer do all the work. Now i have a better grasp on the equipment(PROGRAM)... im just saying it would have been easer to have those settings for a better place to start. PEOPLE FORGET, USING THE RED IS MORE LIKE FILM NOT VIDEO! thank GOD!

RED will offer the option of uploading looks in a future build.

I "reverse engineer" by setting a look in REDALERT (minus curves and some other adjustments) and then, when I am happy with the look, I manually input those settings in to the camera via the menu options (i.e. brightness, contrast, etc).

It worked beautifully on the last shoot I did.

what i think hes asking is like in the program COLOR that comes with FCP. there is a place after the secondaries where there is a list of pre programed looks. like bleached, old film, sepia, select focus, crushed blacks, blown out whights.....

That's probably because (most) editors are not colorists. Just imaging what crap you might end up with if a colorist edited the spot...

cheers,

If you monitor through Blackmagic's HDlink box, you can apply looks to that which will show on the client/director monitor.

Dylan, you can actually do the curves as well by reading off the column of five numbers bottom right in RedAlert and inputting them into the relevant five options in camera in the TONE sub-menu.

I've been doing what exactly Dylan does, but your tip on adding curves completes it. Thanks, Paul. I love this forum. The massive collective brain power astounds...

Hey Paul

That is brilliant!

Thanks for the useful info. I much prefer curves adjustments to "brightness/exposure".

Very cool.
