I'm new here so I'm sure the thread has been posted before..as a Steadicam Operator, I feel a serious over-site has been made in not incorporating a down converter in the camera like the Sony 900R. Is this going to be addressed in the future or not? The need lies in the transmition of the signal to hand held monitors on set..as they all are NTSC/PAL. They facilitate the film making process by just making our jobs easier by not being tethered and followed by an entourage. Or come up with your own HD transmitter that rivals in price to the new IDX one coming out this month. They are answering the call for the need in lieu of LINKS in the UK for formula one racing.

SD will never be an output on the Red AFAIK.
Get one of these like the rest of us...

Price has even dropped to $1100! I paid almost $2K for mine.

The box Evin posted is an AJA HD10MD3, which will downconvert an HD-SDI signal to an SD one, with the choice of SD-SDI, SD-component, or SD-composite. Abel sells these units, as do many other places.

Steadicam Ops don't like to hear this, but it is my opinion that in 2008, one should be in your kit. You or anyone else is welcome to rent these from us, but after a few rentals you might as well own it and charge production back for the convenience. There are a number of cameras out there, RED included, with no SD output.

Would you complain that the RED One did not come with a remote focus unit?

If you are in PAL land and get a HD10MD3, (Sale or rental) be sure it's got the latest firmware. Otherwise 720p50 will output as NTSC only. Makes it impossible to record with a PAL deck...

I've had one of the AJA boxes for years. It practically lived on my varicam for transmission use. Rain, snow, hot, cold, it always worked. They are standard equipment on most HD shoots.

It's a factory update.
Bought mine a few monts ago and it worked fine and output a 576i50 PAL signal. Rented two last week and they had the older firmware which output 480i60 when the camera output 720p50.

How you guys power the AJA HD10MD3 from the Red Camera ?

thanks

Abel makes our own power cables to run them off the D-tap of the battery mount. We can make them for you if you'd like, as can many other places. This is where the service of a boutique operation such as Abel is nice instead of a warehouse operation like B&H. They do not offer such cables or service.

Note that reversing the polarity can fry the AJA, make notice how you insert the D-tab...
