Does anyone make just a shoulder pad with a dovetail on top to slide right into the arri base? I know that ET is working on a whole handheld rig for 2 grand, but it would be nice to have option of buying just the shoulder pad. I also see that Allstar has a shoulder pad but it is a screw in plate on top.

I've been thinking about making one for a long time. Was even thinking about buying the Redrock handheld kit to steal that pad off it and kludge my own.

Probably not quite what you're looking for (but considerably cheaper than the ET rig!) is the Camera Comfort Cushion which quite a lot of RedUsers (myself included) have used with favourable results...you can't argue with 50 bucks..and it looks kind of cool too ;-)

edit: incidentally I don't know if you noticed this thread a while ago (looks like quite a cheap and handy way of re-using your defunct Red shoulder dovetail to fit the ET bridge plate (a tiny bit of machining is necessary):

David,

Do you have any issues with slipping on that pad since the base of the camera doesn't have the shoulder curve the way the ENG cameras do? Are you using Red handles?

Hi,

I find the ET bridge plate kind of digs itself mercilessly into the pad (it would obliterate your bare shoulder in seconds!), so there's not really much slipping at all. Check out the other other idea I just updated on my last post too (might be of interest to you).

Cheers,

I just have got ALLSTAR shoulder pad and experimenting with the lightest set up.

R1, EVF, battery, RED Drive, ALLSTAR shoulder pad and the fastest+lightest(400gr) lens Canon FD L 50mm f/1.2.

Works well.

More info to come.

Stay tuned.

Sanjin, looks like your hands will be in an awkward position?

Sanjin, looks nice and light, but I need the rods with the follow focus and mattebox set up. ET's seems ideal, just stuck getting the whole package. I never bought the basic production pack so I don't have Reds dovetail.

I think allstar went the wrong way. Their solution is to have the shoulder pad slide in over the bottom of the dovetail, leaving the large dovetail plate in the set up. They should have had the top of the shoulder mount be a dovetail to eliminate that extra chunk of metal.

It seems simple, just have the top of the shoulder pad slide into the Arri base plate.

This item item is great. I've used it on a few shoots and feels very comfortable.

The Element Technica handheld rig is the creme de le creme of handheld. If you are doing a lot of handheld work and want to protect your back & spine, then I would quickly invest in the ET rig. That being said, the camera comfort cushion, the ET bridge plate and a set of handles will do the job most of the time. For comfort and versatility, ET all the way. For temporarily saving some money (trips to the chiropractor), the cushion and some handles. Good luck

Newspeak wait.

Above is the lightest version that you could use any lens with screw-in filters (ND, Pola,...)

and to focus and zoom with your fingers like in old days.

This also works well as Rodney Charters ASC CSC showed before.

I said stay tuned.

Now here below is an option for "heavy" loaded kit that has

lightweight stuff like a Vocas matte box, RR FF, Nikon zoom 17-35mm

and ALLSTAR shoulder pad at ALLSTAR dovetail as you can "slide" back and forth on attached RED RAIL.

19mm steel rods should be exchanged with carbon rods.

15mm rods are from aluminum anyway.

Email to

allstar.cine@gmail.com

with your request for ALLSTAR RED shoulder pad.

I paid 350 USD because the old customers have a discount.

The real price is 400 USD.

Shipping (via EMS) is very fast to Europe and it costs about 2O-30 USD.

Hi,Sanjin
Good to see you, thanks for those pics
and ALLSTAR shoulder pad at ALLSTAR dovetail as you can "slide" back and forth on attached RED RAIL.
I saw you mount the small plate under ALLSTAR dovetail, you shouldn`t need it.You can "slide" shoulder pad into ALLSTAR dovetail. And I`ll send you smoe accessories after few days, for increases RED handle mount function.

The webside still building...:waaa: A little busy lately..

Thanks Allstar,

waiting for that extras.

Don't worry our shoulder pad works great and the price is very OK.

The point is to get R1 camera kit as lightweight as possible.

PL guys cannot do so much because the lenses are a bit heavy

but "guerrilla" still lens guys can do much better even with zooms.

Tonight I will go out and shoot using ALLSTAR shoulder pad

with my R1 lightweight kit at the night if the weather is OK.

Hi David,

the paintings are not mine and the weather is a bit problematic tonight but

I will try to go out later and shoot some of Vienna by Night atmosphere.

Of course a short test footage will come as fast as possible.

Stay tuned.

We'll hope for the best with the weather over there.

I'm debating the Allstar shoulder device for the rig I'm putting together so am very interested in your experience - comfort, height of the camera, angle etc. Thanks again.

David
