Great read. I've always been a big fan of his work, and I love his point about how miniatures were prematurely thrown by the wayside in favor of CGI. To me there's no contest. I love the way a miniature can come through on the screen. It's truly beautiful. So many cgi space ships just don't look right. Sometimes it is a poor job matching color and especially contrast with the other elements. Sometimes it just looks like a cgi model designed for 1080 or 2k... My reaction is usually that there just isn't the perception that there's more detail that we just haven't gotten to see yet. Go look at his Oscar nominated work on Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I'll leave V'ger out of this, it's a masterpiece in its own right, but just look at the Enterprise model throughout. I have never seen a CGI ship look quite as real.

I'm always hoping someone will track down the old Sci-fi models from back in the day and shoot them in high-res just so we can see what they would look like with today's cameras. The Enterprise would look pretty sweet in 4K.
