  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Double Sun

Hey guys, by the way we have a great article on our site featuring Pawel Achtel. It has some great info on IRND filters and their application/proper use for Red. If you plan on using PANCRO IR+ND's now or in the future it is a must read regarding commonly held views in relation to IRND filter use and IR contamination-Check it out if you get a chance! Thanks!! http://pancro.com/#/mythbusters/4532015074

Hi,

Tilting the filters will solve the problem

Yes, with Pancros. But, you can not tilt dichroic filter because the wavelength of light selected by the filter varies with the angle of incidence of the light.

Just for the record I've seen exactly this type of reflection when using long lenses with no filter - on very similar shots.

I'd go with internal reflection for now, though I'm sure tilting the filter will help in some situations.

Though it maybe that there just isn't enough filtering in the first place. If one looks at the shot the sun is still very bright despite being at f22 - atmospheric conditions didn't look like they were taking too much out of the suns brightness when the shot was taken so perhaps a little more ND+IR filtering would have been required...?

This is what happened to me the other day.
Red 18-50 zoom f5.6 and Pancro 1.5 taped to the lens. After that shot we got another mattebox but it was still there. The effect is not that clear when the focus is further away but you can still see it.
For this film all kind of flairs where welcomed so I really don't mind but I would like to know what is the cause of it. When shooting Cooke's the effect was close to none. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I had a whole message about your matte box, then I read you taped it-

You'll need to make sure that it's light tight all around the lens- I think you're seeing the reflection of the lens so clearly because the light hitting the back of the filter, bouncing into the front of the lens and illuminating everything-

I've seen this a bunch with a matte box not quite tight ot the lens or if an AC forgets the neoprene donut with a zoom or weird sized prime.

Keep taping.

The filter on this shot was taped with black gaffa on to the lens itself. To be clear I shot this in VERY bright sunlight in Dubai.. When the mattebox was on no donut was used at all.
