  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't use the FilmTools car mount kit on paint!

Yeah Stephen, please do share more, as I have heard nothing but good things about this units, and in fact in the market to buy a full Kit my self, so wanted to have my options still open in between the FilmTools unit and the much more expensive Mathews unit.

BTW, thanks for chiming in with honest concern Stan.

I had something like that happen on a custom paint job with the same car mount kit from Film Tools. It was in South Carolina, 100+ degree heat. We pulled the cups and I saw those rings. I freaked, however, but the time I got to the car owner, the rings had disappeared. I am guessing either wax or the paint it self was soft, but as it was soft the heat ironed it out ..

No solution for you, but just a similar experience. Due to the nature of the car, I just assumed a fresh, uncured ( and poor) paint job. I did ask, the guy said it was a year old.

Hi all. . . an update here:

Although it was by no means my intention to do so, my post about being wary of using Filmtools' suction cup car mount got the attention of Stan at Filmtools.

Stan personally wrote me a very nice email, was both disappointed in our outcome, and very apologetic. He not only offered to take back our unused Filmtools car mount kit, but our second one, as well. We are going to take him up on the unused one, but we are going to be keeping the second set. Even though we'll probably never use it as a car mount kit, we have found it utterly invaluable for solving all sorts of other grip challenges. It's worth the price for that alone.

Stan also said that, given all of the kits he has sold, he was very surprised to hear of our experience. I'm with him, I have to like those odds. No, it didn't work out for us, but it has thousands of other times.

Anyway, I just wanted to give you all an update of his concern, his dedicated response to our problem, and the eventual outcome.

Thanks for listening.

Stephen

You are right about the mounts having a multitude of uses. I shot a scene in a jail cell a couple of years ago. The walls and ceiling were plate steel. I used the suction cups, added a spud, and hung lights from them. Worked great.

I'm glad to hear Stan was so responsive to your problem. I have been a Filmtools customer for years. It is always nice to know you have been doing business with good people.
