  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

Actually, I did pay. I bought almost every accessory I could from Red in good faith. They were listed as Scarlet compatible, not Scarlet-X. I will be out several hundred dollars in restocking fees. I bought media, power, a side handle, etc. In good faith. Not to mention a monitor and over grand's worth of lenses from third parties. Not to mention endless hours over the years drooling over vaporware. I can't get my time back, but I may be able to recoup some of my money. Maybe. Do you now understand my bait-and-switch sentiment?

However, I have spoken my piece. I have nothing else to add to my argument.

Sounds like you should get the scarlet X brain. You've already got everything to make it work.

Not sure what you mean by lenses, RED never made it clear what type of lenses would actually work with the 2/3rd camera, miniRED mount....how many lenses have that?

Kyle - given that a lot of accessories are backordered and might remain so for awhile, you might have better luck selling them here on REDuser for quick delivery. Just a thought.

Yeah, hopefully I can. I think I have pissed a lot of people off on here. That is sad, and it wasn't my intention. Sorry for that, really.

C mount. I took them at their word. Jarred said C mount, I bought c mount.

Good call Terry.

Kyle, you want to sell that side handle? :) PM me. you wont have to pay restocking fees with me!

Maybe, but people often forgive you quickly when you've got something they want!

With that, can we close this thread with a cautionary tale of: Don't buy, plan or committ to anything based on a RED product rumor, prediction, statement or announcement. When the FedEx gent knocks upon your door, that might be a good time to start planning how to use and accessorize your new spiffy RED products. I am an example of this same mistake - anyone want to but a 12TB Thunderbolt RAID I purchased in anticipation of Apple releasing the next generation Tower this fall? Oops. Looks kinda funny hanging off a Mac Book

If only, my friend. I spent hours crunching the numbers before I posted this thread. I was still short, despite a loan for Scarlet and savings. I came up just short. Scarlet-x is a GREAT camera. No doubt. It's just more than I can afford and not what I want. 4K is about twice the data as 3K, so it would require a lot more computing power. I couldn't afford that either.

When I think about it, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's Canon (or Panasonic) who comes out with a fixed 2/3" (or 4/3") camera similar to the "old" Scarlet. One would think there's a void now to be filled, and sales would be quite high. Even if it's not 4k, or 3k for that matter.
Well, Canon does make a pretty nice 1/3" fixed lens HD camera in the XF305. It's low bitrate, of course, and doesn't shoot above 30p in 1080p, but then neither does the new C300. Oh, and the price? $7,000. How much do you think a 2/3" version would cost?

Maybe I'm crazy but I have no intent of spending $20k on my scarlet package.

$14k + $900 for an extra 64GB card.

Where is the next $5k coming from?

I don't know what Drew had in mind when writing, but I came to similar figures when pricing out a system. I guess it all depends what you already own, what kind of productions you're looking to do, and how much you're wiling to rent/do without.

The biggies - media and power.

Two 64GB cards will get you 10-15 minutes each of recording (depending on compression) at 4K 2:1 24p - so 20-30 minutes total. Depending on how fast you can offload those cards, that might not be enough to keep the camera fed. I personally was looking more at a 64GB 4-pack as a minimum, at $3K. I guess if you're able to keep pumping cards through transfer, or aren't shooting as much footage, you might be fine with 2 (or shooting higher compression/lower resolution).

A single redvolt lasts maybe 30 minutes in an Epic. They're supposed to last longer in a Scarlet, but we don't know just how much yet. They also take 2 hours to charge in the travel charger. Again, for me (and many), two batteries and one charger is not enough to keep up with a normal production day. Granted you can power down more often because of the faster boot-up, but having not done an Epic shoot yet (still working mostly R1), I don't have a good idea just how much it helps. If you're staying with the RedVolts, I feel like you need at least another two batteries and an additional charger ($515) - maybe more. Of course the forthcoming quad charger is bounds better, but no word on pricing yet.

Alternatively, you could forgo RedVolts and go the brick route - but that opens up another can of worms that I won't go into.

Just those two add about $3800 to the price (in my config). Then comes any mounting stuff you want/need - baseplate/rods, top handle, etc. Those individual couple-hundred-dollar pieces add up quick.

This is all also assuming you already have/don't need a follow focus, mattebox, filters, lenses, etc.

So again, depends on what you need, and what you already have/can do without.

If nothing else, this thread can serve as a cautionary tale. As Haakon has suggested, it is best to adjust the way we must process Red's announcements. Take it with a pinch of salt.

If you're done, I'll shut this thread down.
