  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi All,

I'm not a technical person at all so I don't know what this e-mail means. It was sent to me by a friend in the UK. Maybe all you technical savvy guys can decipher.

"......he says that people have found that the signal coming out of the RED ONE is not very strong and that he has developed a distribution amplifier
specifically to solve this and it will be available in about 2-3months time. (have no idea if this is true or not but he obviously thinks it is enough of
a problem to design a distribution amp for it!)...."

True? False? I don't really care.

There are a number of signals coming out of the Red One. Which one is he refering to?

This is the reply I got from my friend in the UK..

"....Mr. C had a client who was finding it ok to record to Red's HDs but when he wanted to distribute the HD/SDI signal elsewhere (to monitors, recorders etc..) then the signal did not stand up well or travel well very far so Mr. C supplied him with a distribution amp and all was well..."

Still not quite enough information to say what the problem really is, if any.

If the HD-SDI out of the Red is to standard (and this is the first I've read that the HD-SDI signal maybe wasn't), then it should travel plenty far as long as broadcast quality cable and connectors are used.

If you're feeding multiple destination devices then you'd have to have a distribution amp (DA) unless your device chain all had proper high impedance loop throughs and the last device was terminated correctly. If not then a DA is needed to isolate double (or more) terminations which would definitely halve your signal or more - this would be a termination/loopthrough problem, NOT a Red issue!

RED HD-SDI is not week or wrong.

Just different.

The solution is simple.

Just add a TRI Levels sync generator and problems solved.

solid as a rock.

Update...

Scratch currently has no problem going out to HDCAM-SR.

Looks like we will need some kind of adapter to go from RED's 24p True progressive to HDCAM-SR 24psf.

I can't wait until build 16 is release so I can test this with Blackmagic and AJA.

Stay Tuned.
