  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't get confused...

Could it be that Scarlet will need the Red One to work? Like these Iconix cameras (which are great, btw) that need some kind of recorder. That's what I seem to understand from Jim's post. It would explain why no reservations would be necessary: only Red One owners would be able to use it anyway.

That would sucketh mightily....:ranting2:

By the time Scarlet would be hitting the market, 1080p will be status quo. Now as long as Scarlet has FCP compatability and a 25mbit data record rate I'll be happy! None of this proprietary edit platforms like Sony does with there HDD pocket HDV cams.

I know you like to keep this stuff close to the vest and I understand why. But I wondering if I can get you to reveal one tiny fact...

...is it a video camera or a still camera?

it's both

it's both

that's a little like asking if the red one is a still camera or a video camera. so long as you have a high res digital cinema/video stream, it can be used as both. so why would red make a pocket still camera when they can just as easily make a pocket hd video camera that can take stills too?

I have to wonder what Jim means by "features". Is S35 sensor size a feature? Obviously a pocket camera is not going to have an S35-sized sensor (almost certainly not even a 2/3" one). Is REDCODE a feature?

Yeah, but isn't that a bit like using a Ferrari to drive to the mailbox?

I have stated it is a motion capture camera...

Huh? I'm not sure what you're saying. Yes, a HD camera that takes still isn't much more complicated than making a video camera that doesn't take stills.

But are you say a still camera is as easy to make as a video camera? It's not "just as easy". To process one frame at a time takes less computing power than it would to process 24fps. In fact, 24fps takes a computer that is 24x as fast. And there are other computational needs.

Motion Capture

Motion Capture

Jim I have the utmost respect and highest regards for your business ethic. Don't know you personally so can't comment on the face to face. However your actions and comments on this board show you have true character. That being said, I don't want to hang on your every word but being as though Scarlet will not replace nor compete with Red One is it possible you have come up with a super high speed motion capture? say 300fps seeing as though you said motion capture I'm just hypothesizing. That would be a great feature and selling point. Just a guess.

Looks like it going to be a SD-720-1080 RAW Camera with variable frame rates.
2k would be amazing but I don't see it happening.
Fixed lens with 20 x Zoom, changeable ??? Don't see it, but who knows ???
Will Prob record to Cards.
Hopefully Balanced XLR Audio 24bit
High Quality LCD.
MINI SDI-OUT Recording Option (not so sure)
MINI SDI-OUT Monitoring option (again not so sure but would be great)
If its not a changeable lense then it would have to have some form of ND's
Lastly some form of focus assist and auto focus.

If Scarlet is about 1/2 to 1/4 the size of the DVX then the above should be achievable and still in a pocket size.

Just my two cents !!!

I think people are taking the "pocket" part of the pocket cam a little too literally. If this camera is going to compete with the sub 5 grand market, it's got to a. be at least 1080p b. have interchangeable lens and c. have XLR and vfr. That's not fitting in your pocket.
Having said that, and knowing the standards these guys have set, and knowing that "someone" has purchased ReelStream, a company that offered 2k resolution for 3500 bucks, and knowing that Red has forced the industry to look at it's tradition of withholding technology and charging top dollar every step of the way, I'd wager that at the very least scarlet will have:
2k and 1080p capture, vfr's, xlr, interchangeable mounts, and cf storage capability.
It's got to have that, or it'll be under a thousand bucks. Not having those features though, doesn't fit with the Red philosophy.

Other possibilities: "talk" capability with RedOne, 1080p sdi output, and the usual tc jam sync, multiple cf card slots (or maybe the smaller cf cards that we have for cell phones)an instant indian buffet restaurant locator, handwarmers, hot water boiler that dispenses choice of tea or coffee, and last but certainly not least, a back massager.

This is my only speculation on this camera, I swear.

who says scarlet will record sound? I picture a very compact 2k or even 4k camera which records very high speed to compact flash in redcode... which would be badass as all hell.

While we're all guessing... I'm going to venture into left field: Red has partnered with Apple to create a Red iPhone (maybe the iRed)...

I guess it is just pocket pool until the cat is out of the bag...

Forgive my inexperience with it, but what would the point of an SDI out be?

One would only have access to that on an uber-professional set, and if that's your game, you're shooting with a Red One.

HDMI would be great for previewing; easy out to a $400 consumer HDTV or slap a DVI adapter on there and go to a $250 Dell monitor.

And you don't need it in the editing suite, since you'll be taking REDCODE right off of the CF card.

So I really can't see why they would dedicate space on the body for something like that.

I may be missing something obvious; please let me know.

Thanks.

You know, if it did use C-mount lenses for interchangeable lens options, it wouldn't be too bad for converters. Looking at B&H Photo right now, a Nikon to C-mount adapter is only $30.

I'm excited about this, Scarlet could be anything!

And anything (something) it shall be...

Jim
