  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't assume that you will get something. Wait until you actually have it. For people who bought equipment prior to the release, that was your risk, we all knew the Scarlet was subject to change, you rolled the dice, and you lost.
There are so many feelings, but if you're in a rage and upset, maybe you should notpost on a forum (things that you may regret later) and go get a beer. (makes me feel better)

RED came out with a camera, if you don't like, voice your opinion but dont be a butt head about it. No camera manufacture owes us anything.

I felt horrible after the announcement, so I sympathize. Red waited pretty much until the last second and didn't manage people's expectations properly. Red offers products that enable people's careers, so I think they should either become more transparent, or not announce anything until it is ready to ship. I agree with others who have said this feels like a bait and switch, and it is only because of Red's overall philosophy that I know that wasn't their intention. In the end, I've found a way to make the cost work but I feel for those whose dreams of starting a new career have been shattered.
Right now, I'm still a little disappointed that the frame rates on the Scarlet-X are lower than what was hinted would be possible on the OG Scarlet and that true 4K capture (4.5) isn't possible on the Scarlet-X at 24fps, so I'm going to be shooting at 3K HDRx.

"not announce anything until it is ready to ship" has been policy since September. I feel its a good decision. I feel that better frame rates will come with more builds. Patience.

If anyone wants to make a film they can grab a DSLR or AF100 or Z1 or whatever they can get their hands on. If the content is good enough none of that will matter. It's pretty sad all these people pinning their hopes and dreams to a logo on the side of metal and transistors.

This film was purchased by a distributor for 13 mil and will have a wide release in theaters. it was shot on a 5d Mark II. You can go down to your local Best Buy and purchase a 5D MII right now for less than $2,500.00.

Are you gonna make a film like this with it? Probably not. If you can't, can you make that film with a Scarlet? Probably not.

I'm sorry I cannot help it but... While RED has a major hard on for all things 4K & 5K.. The simple fact is that TODAY you can make a nice living shooting just about anything in 1080p. For those of you whoes "dreams have been shattered" because of Red's announcement, I would say "look around you" There are a number of fine cameras out there you can start your dreams with that work quite well provided you know how to shoot and light (Without these abilities, neither the Scarlet or Epic would be much help).

While waiting for our Epic to ship we bought a Panasonic AF-100 and landed 6 commercials. They paid for the 100 and gave us some nice coin to boot:

No dream should be conditional on getting the toy you want up front.. The dream is about an accomplishment, not equipment. I want RPPs, and I've been looking for a way to get into them.. But I can't.. Know why? Can't afford them.. But I can afford canon lenses.. So I will start there, earn the cash, and buy the RPPs.

It's what the grown ups do.

But that statement subverts your original thesis. There may or may not be higher frame rates -- you just can't make assumptions. And for those who've been disappointed (particularly those who wanted the 2/3-inch 3K Scarlet), patience has not paid off.

And wasn't the first Paranormal Activity shot on sub-$10k DV cam and edited in Sony Vegas on a laptop?

There is a difference. Act of Valor is a movie that's meant to look like, well, a movie. Paranormal activity, at least the first one is part of that very small genre of movies that are based on teh "found footage" scenario, similar to Blair Witch.

They are not supposed to look like movies, they are supposed to look like crappy footage found in someone's consumer video camera that just happened to be unbelievable events caught on tape.

I"m not really a fan of the "found footage" genre. It's only applicable in a very narrow set of circumstances, and how many times is the audience going to buy that the film looks like crap because it's "found footage"?

28 days later is a better example, IMO. I really liked it, and portions were shot on a Canon XL1.

I also really liked Monsters. Part of that was the really cool FX work which I could not have done, but which the Director did himself in After Effects. But that was shot with a XDCAM EX.

Never saw Paranormal, was just attempting to quote what I though I heard. Loved 28 Days too.

You mis understand my point, My point is that if better frame rates come out then maybe the camera will be the camera for you. I said that I feel it will happen, hope you dont think I meant that it was coming out for sure. My feeling should not be interpreted as an assumption. Its more of a gut feeling. Patience paid off for the people who didn't buy parts before the camera was released. Also I never said it always pays off.
