After much research I found out that warranty expires after a year and is non-transferable at any point during the warranty life, so you are pretty much shooting yourself in the foot once you buy the camera.

1. You don't know where its been and could have been used for rent in many productions, which means too many owners, which obviously affects the life span of any camera.

2. The person who is selling the camera to you CAN perform a $500 evaluation with red.com inc, which will give you only 90 days of warranty and repairs will have to be paid for (if any).

3. Red One has cameras in stock and provides 1 year warranty with the purchase of a camera. Saving 5-6K is completely not worth the cost you will have to pay for repairs down the road and production time lost.

This isn't really news, in fact it has been discussed here on the forums many times.

RED One camera warranty is for 12 months and applicable to the original purchaser only, non-transferable.

When you buy a used RED One camera, you need to change the owner of record information with RED. This costs $500. For an additional fee, you can also send the camera in to RED and have it tuned up and issued a 90-day warranty to the new owner.

There are still many good reasons to buy a used RED One. Lower serial numbers are still desirable for better placement in line for Epic X upgrades, etc.. There is still a significant savings with some used camera deals out there and with the tune-up and 90 day warranty, such purchases would make real good sense.

What Jeff said

What Jeff said

I bought my RED from a former owner, and it's been a great deal for me.

Besides all the points Jeff made, there is the fact that some of the components, particularly the EVF have been very hard to come by. Buying a used package can solve that problem.

IMHO, your statement is a bit unilateral.

My $.02

What happens then if you bought it without warranty because it's used but you then send it in for the Epic X upgrade. Do you get a new warranty based on Epic X upgrade(or do you have to have it checked out as you described before you upgrade it to Epic X)?

I bought my RED Used and couldn't be happier. The factory warranty was almost expired so i got an extension of warranty (that i ended up declining for reasons I wont discuss here) and got a chance at an Epic x in its early stages of selling.

These cameras are not dispposable like a PC.....

EPIC-X is a new camera and will have a new warranty. If you do stage 2, where you keep your RED One, you don't have to send it in, as far as I know.

One thing I was wondering recently, Apple only gives you one year of warranty and let's you pay for 2 additional years.

But in Europe, all these products should have legally at least 2 years of warranty since 2004, and I think to remember when your (in Apple's case) warranty expires after one year, you can still claim it during the second year based upon Europe's legislation.

So with Epic how will the warranty be for European (or Worldwide customers).

Hey Jeff,

I called Red and talked with the head of title transfers and he told me that trade in for the Epic does not go by serial numbers, but instead the date of the invoice. I presume this means that anyone who bought the camera used will go to the end of the line when upgrading to Epic.

Pretty sure that would be the date of the original invoice (when it was purchased new). That's a legacy of the fact that RED reservation holders were allowed to delay taking delivery of their cameras, if they so chose, until RED One was considered "out of beta" (if memory serves, firmware build 16).

RED One reservation holders who completed their purchase at the earliest opportunity argued that others who "sat on" earlier serial numbers should not be placed ahead of them in the Epic queue merely due to having put down a refundable deposit earlier, and RED agreed, thus "original invoice delivery date" became the factor which determines your place in line.

At least, that's the way I remember it ...

Where did you hear this? Cause this is what I found:

"Is the upgrade program to EPIC X only available to current RED ONE owners?
The EPIC X upgrade program is open to all RED ONE owners, present and future. There is no cut off date set for the upgrade program."

Thanks,
Arseniy

You can only buy Red directly from the US so far. So European laws do not apply. (not a big fan how Red handles their warranty/transfer of ownership issues by the way...)

Hmm, pretty sure I read that on here rather recently. I think it has to do with trade-ins for Epic, Epic X is something else.

Epic-X is only for RED ONE's before the cutoff and comes with free modules.

RED ONE's after the cutoff are only :001_huh: eligible for full-value trade-in on Epic S35.

You can say this about any camera you buy used. If you go buy a 2 year old Arri 535, how do you know what its been through?

I bought my Aaton A-minima from Abelcine and spent thousands fixing and maintaining it. No warranty covered me for for 8 years of owning it. Unless I paid for it.
