Does anyone know if acquisition of 3D motion picture will be the same for the new auto stereoscopic Dolby 3D format?

It requires depth metadata. It can be provided by the production, like it was done with Avatar or it can be extracted in post. In case of Dolby they are using PF Depth.
So, the short answer is yes. Everything can be done in post.

:icon_bs:Uhhh...What a load of crap!

"Broadcasters can deploy Dolby 3D without worrying about ongoing improvements in 3D displays, because the technology works on all of today’s and tomorrow’s TVs."

"Dolby 3D is available now for use in streaming applications on connected TVs, tablets, and smartphones—regardless of the display technology used in the device."

"Upgrades half-resolution to full-resolution 3D" -
he he, this one may be for you, Ross, if you can run it a dozen times over the footage :)

"The core component of Dolby 3D is a pixel-accurate conversion/multiview-rendering module (?!). It’s designed to deliver the industry’s most "depth-accurate" 3D video for glasses-free (autostereoscopic) displays (?!). Other important features of the module include:
Real-time conversion of 2D content to 3D (?!)
User control to adjust depth and perspective for any 3D display (!?)
Dolby 3D also features bandwidth-efficient frame-compatible full-resolution (FCFR) video-codec enhancement technology for all H.264 devices. This ensures full HD playback at any connection speed. (?!)"

Can someone actually spell out in plain English what this is (a display, a codec, a 2D to 3D conversion, a dream, etc...) and how is stereoscopic effect achieved on ANY display over ANY bandwidth on ANY device with no glasses from 2D to 3D conversion and "provides the best 3D picture".

What they say is that you actually do not need to shoot or even produce films in 3D, because, at the "core" of the "system" is "Real-time conversion of 2D content to 3D "

Sorry, all this sounds to me like a lot of hog wash :)

They create this by using a lenticular overlay with proprietary software.......

"The centerpiece of the Dolby booth at NAB is a large screen autostereo display prototype jointly developed with Philips. It is the best autostereo display that I have seen to date. The large 4K screen produces the 3D effect via a lenticular overlay and proprietary software. According the Dr. Joop Talstra of Philips, the set takes a normal 2-view feed from a Blu-ray or other source and both interpolates and extrapolates in real time to create 28 views spanning the full 180 degrees in front of the screen. As I moved sideways across stereo pair boundaries the expected distortion was much less than that of other displays I have seen. They did not demo 2D content, but because the lenticular overly is not removable or neutralizable, it will produce a less-than full HD 2D image. Content from Hugo, Captain America, and a Red Bull snow skiing video was used for demo material. High quality Dolby audio reproduction complemented the video."

Ahh did you see the Dolby display at NAB? It is considered to be a complete disaster. Some of the worst headache inducing stereo I've ever seen and that seems to be the universal consensus over on CML. as it had been hyped for over a year as the best auto display it was high on our must see list but it quickly sucked the hope out of everyone who saw it. It now appears large screen autostereo will never be anything more then a point of sale or some other gimmick where the viewer is limited to a 10sec dose of its mind bending poison. The intro with James Cameron was so horrifically bad with the big warp bubble behind him I thought my position might be bad so I looked behind me to see the whole audience with sour pained looks on their faces.

i noticed they had a camera guy filming each audience head on, I'm sure they got some amusing reactions. Was the whole thing a sick technological joke?

i hope Dolby has put this nightmare behind them.

Thanks Aaron for clarifications. I haven't seen it myself, but after reading the claims on their website, just on technical merits I got a sense that it was either a pipe dream or a disaster of biblical proportions. You clarified it to be the later :)

If it sounds too good to be true...it probably is...

I wouldn't be to quick to jump to conclusions if I were you Pawel!

It took me about 10 seconds to evaluate their claims (aimed probably at 5-year olds) on the face value and shoot them down.
Making quick and educated decisions usually worked great for me, but thanks for your advice :)

I'm amazed how you fish out all the hype out there in a naive hope it would do miracles for you without even considering whether it is actually plausible, let alone giving it proper consideration based on technical and scientific merits.

If you actually believe what Dolby says, you should flog your 3D rig on eBay quick because, according to Dolby, their 2D to 3D conversion will deliver the best 3D viewing experience ever. LOL

Any multiview auto stereo display INCLUDING Dolby's requires extensive conversion-like work to be done to make left/right 2 view stereo material compatible. I walked the floor at the 3D Entertainment Summit with a top exec from Hollywod's best conversion hous & he was very disappointed to see someone other than his crew had put material from one of their most successfully converted features on the Dolby screen. It did not look good. The 4k display has a lot of resolution, and has the potential to be good, but the dirty little secret is that putting content on it at any level of good quality remains a substantial challenge.

Thanks Jake it sounds like the beginning of a revolution for 3D and domestic 3D will take off like a rocket.....lets hope so ;-) Check this out....

Well, I think it sounds too good to be true. If any company wants to sell anything then it needs to clearly say what is being sold. If you don't prospective customers are suspicious.

Im also thinking, If you can't clearly communicate and idea then you probably don't understand it....

From what I can understand from reading various articles on the Dolby 3D
they have create 3D experience by using a lenticular overlay with proprietary software so old 3D television can be converted with the overlay and new sets will have it built in. Most of the information I can find states it is in development and is early days. I just get a sense of doom from everyone regarding 3Ds future and I was trying to be optimistic.

The Dolby 3D TV I saw at IBC was the best AS3D display I've seen... but not by much. Still not good enough for my peepers.
