  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Doing some tests with RED Scarlet X, Sony F3 and Canon C300.

My pathetic try at a 'blog' about the shoot is posted at http://www.utahcamerarentals.com.
Working on getting the original files uploaded somewhere permanent... stay tuned!
:wink5:

Chris, you mention the need for a Red Rocket card to edit. Are you using FCP? You really need to do yourself a favor and give Premiere CS5 a try. I have a mid level computer and i can edit at 1/4 res in real time - no transcoding, I can apply the same adjustments as Red Cine X right in Premiere... it's amazing!

fwiw, yes you can edit in 1/4 res in real time... but at SOME point comes the need to render.. on my imac it took about 80 minutes for a 2 minute short I made (granted there was a bunch of effects stuff on top of it.. but at quad-HD.. if two minutes takes that long.. I can't imagine waiting for a 90 minute film....)

Yes, I have CS5.5 but choose to use Final Cut Pro X. Very tempted recently with Adobe though...
And Yoav is right, at some point, you need to render!

True - but I'd rather keep everything original until the point of rendering. I'm getting much quicker render times on my PC outputting to 4k (just for the hell of it, I don't have a 4k monitor), more like 10 minutes of render for 1 minute of output (with grading/curves applied).

I owned the F3 and refused to pay $3800 for an upgrade to S-Log. Its a great camera. Use the same lens on all three cameras for the test. Low light tests are over rated as the lenses are the cause of most "poor" test results. Lenses perform at f5.6. I was asked to shoot on an F3 and an Epic in very low light conditions (not a test) and found with some of my experience I could match the shots nicely in post. I own Scarlet #1164 (Robeye) and it performed flawlessly in very low light with Canon 24mm @ f1.2. The Sony is spectacular in low light too but with S-log it was 2x the price of my Scarlet.

The Canon 24mm Max Aperture is 1.4. Just a small correction :)

I'd like to see:

1. Color science comparison (after grading). I want a richness to the images, and I want to see which camera does better here.
2. Dynamic range. Especially in the highlights.
