  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does the new RED XLR Microphone Cable provide 48v (Phantom power)?

Unless they cleverly hid a battery in there... No. Phantom power would come from the camera and is currently disabled. Hopefully it will work soon.

It won't do phantom power. It's just a 3.5->XLR cable.

You can get the HOSA cheaper version of the same cable:

It works great on self-powered balanced mics (like the Rode ntg-2) but isnt gonna help you if you need phantom power...

I've had two of the Hosa one and don't like them because of the build quality. The connectors keep getting bent and the rubber wraps at the ends always slide off.

I'm trying RED's one because I'm sure that the build quality will be quite a bit better.

Thanks for this, I've been needing one of these, surprised there not sold out already considering all the audio threads on here.

Probably easy to make and they know they're be a great deal of demand for them (each camera sold if they don't' already have a solution will require two of these) so I'm sure they made a boat load to keep their costs per unit down and ensure that its not sold out too quickly.

I can confirm that this new RED audio input cable will support +48V Phantom Power once that is enabled in camera software.

BTW - be sure to get the Stereo shown above. There's also a mono, that isn't designed for balanced signals.

The wiring diagram on this page might help if you decide to use another solution than RED's:

I have a question:

I don't have a RAIL system. Is there some way to provide some stability for the XLR connection?.

Just hanging it off that cable worries me a bit, as if that tiny connector in the camera has an issue due to the cable getting yanked (or just normal usage), that would be a real problem?

You can opt to save a few bucks and run the risk of ordering / building the wrong type of adaptor cable, or you can buy a professional grade cable from RED. We saw enough comments on this issue that we knew we'd best serve our customers by offering a RED cable option.

I don`t know if this is the best place to ask this, but is it possible to enter with line adio signal on the camera imputs? Coming from a mixer for instance?

Thanks!

Dont think line level exists yet. The other odd thing is if the camera is powered down, the audio 3.5mm jack needs to be dissconected and re connected for the audio in to become active again. I hope this gets fixed soon.

+1 on this. This is very frustrating, as I need to always conserve power and need to power down it's easy to miss this. I'm sure it's going to get me at crucial time. Hopefully power management will be the next major item addressed!!!
