  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does the concept of DSMC on 2/3rd chips include AE and AF?

I've been bugging other members about AF and AE features I would like to have for certain situations, specially during documentary, that I find helpful in my current camera (Sony HVR Z7). I know the Red line up of cameras is beyond comparison, but I am concerned about how practical they can be for very small crews under difficult situations. Since the concept of a hybrid medium appeared, I thought that all the benefits of still photography would be included in these cameras, or please correct me if I am wrong. Most still photographer nowadays take advantage of AE and AF if the situation requires it, and I'm sure that's what they are expecting of a Red camera if they want to use it with their lenses.

In an ideal world, I would love to use my Canon Lenses or Nikon Lenses for recording documentaries on a 2/3 rd Scarlet Brain, and if required, be able to use the AF or AE when situations get complicated. Maybe these lenses are not destined for this, like those of a video camera, and in this case, I'm wondering if Red will provide this kind of lenses apart from the fixed 8x Scarlet. Many will tell me to just get the Fixed 8x but I would like to use primes when I can.

Does anyone have these needs ?

Thanks for your input

I too have somewhat similar needs, minus the AF and AE. For me it will really depend on RED's mini primes, because with a 2/3'' sensor you can't really use a Nikon Prime with the 3.9x crop factor, unless you want strong tele.

If the Mini Primes are affordable, I'll get the Scarlet 2/3''. If not I'm thinking about the Panasonic GH1 with manual controls and HD compressed video. Although shooting in RAW with RED would be sweet, but with Panasonic you would have better low lighting shooting and more shallow DOF on the 4/3'' sensor. (I made a post in another thread comparing the two cameras)

But I can't answer your question for sure, although I got the impression that the answer was no, but hopefully someone will know for sure.
