  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does RRX help in the creation of .RED files..

with 700+ views and no replies I am guesssing nobody outside Red knows...

With GPU accelerated decoding coming along nicely I am just trying to work out how many RRX's to get... Since the DVS product that the original RR was based on could creat DCPs I am hopeful that from a hardware pov it is possible but without a market Red may not prioritise development?

So maybe the question should be: Does anyone think that .Red (and perhaps DCP) encoding acceleated by RRX would help them spend money?

thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

the .RED format and DCP format are totally different.

As far as I understood the RRX card can accelerate the process by speeding up your *.R3D decoding significantly. However, I doubt this is the bottleneck of the encoding process. I'd assume that the .RED encoding is fairly slow, so having hardware accelerated *.R3D file decoding my not change the total rendertime significantly or measureable. And in real world, who does really source from *.R3D files for a final encoding, except for dailies?

Btw, our FinalDCP software supports the RED SDK and can natively transcode from *.R3D to DCP in one step (the same doubts apply as for *.R3D to *.RED conversion, see above). If you have a RED ROCKET installed, the RED ROCKET should also accelerate this process.

May RED will at some point implement hardware acceleration for the encoding on the RRX card. That would be much more useful to me that the decoding of R3Ds.

Cheers,
Axel

We've been lobbing various versions of this query to RED for several months now. There are several potential reasons that RED has chosen to stay out of this area so far, not to mention the apparent "pause" in RedRay shipments.

IMO, the RedRay and .RED encoding ecosystem is an example of just how critical timing has become in high tech product release cycles. Release too soon, and you risk being eclipsed by your competitors in the first year. Wait too long for the next key piece of tech to drop (HDMI 2.0 anyone) and risk being late to your own party.

Monday morning quarterbacking such things is cake, but in advance, not so much.

IAC, RED manifested a hardware box/IP delivery solution when others were only talking about it. I see value in that, even if all it did was prime the marketplace.

Thanks Blair...

I didn't even know there had been a delay...

I'm sitting on the fence about 4k monitoring and finishing in my studio. Obviously I have been shooting 4k for just under 6 years and would like to look at 4k monitoring for set, for dailies, for grade, and for selling services/marketing. I assumed I could use the low cost redray for a few tasks but the encode times would be a little problematic. If RRX helped then great... If it could get close to RT then it would be really interesting.

Anyone have any real hands on time with the new tvlogic 4k 31inch?

Thanks again

I think everything will be far clearer in the next six months as far as RED RAY goes. Probably going to see a bit of that sexy beast of a laser projector too since every major projection company is saying they will be going deep into laser projection sales next year.
