Does Anyone Like 3d?

I love 3D but this image was too great not to share...

awesome Ace, LOVE it! I'm now using this as my Facebook Profile pic ;)

I think after Avatar a lot of 3D haters are going to change their mind...

4K + glasses, huh? I know one guy who is an expert in both fields...

Tell him to get moving! :) The biggest threat to the 3D paradigm that we have now is selectively turning off and on the audience's eyes. If someone were to remove this factor from the equation we could see immersive 3D on Airliners. I don't think you'd need the full 4K rez in the eyepiece. Of course the next challenge would be the form factor of the goggles.

That would be cool if OAKLEY made some Oakley O ROKR Pro 3d glasses. (yeah I bought a pair and works great with iphone)
( they already have the bluetooth sound figured out ) now just to change the lenses for a fit.

Later on im gonna see if my REDone can power or charge my Oakley glasses and iphone.

Speaking of James Cameron, I just read this fascinating article about him and Avatar. It's quite long, but if you have the time it's well worth the read.

I for one, am very excited about Avatar.

Yes, this is a great article, interesting insight into Cameron, who got his start as a model maker for Roger Corman. He is an intense filmmaker.

Worth mentioning, but nothing to do with 3D... this week's New Yorker has an article on Wes Anderson, worth checking out.

I have seen the Avatar featurette and Beowolf 3D as well as numerous trailers and am not impressed. In my opinion 3D works best when you don't notice it (in the way that you don't "notice" color). Then it can actually work as a means of supporting the story in the way a carefully planned moodboard and lighting can. Seeing the Avatar featurette was the biggest disappointment in a long time. I thought that with LotR we were finally at a stage where cg creatures looked photorealistic, but then... enter, Avatar.

Looking forward to the article though (the magazine always takes some time till it makes its way across the ocean).

The Avatar preview was my only good 3D experience. Coraline I didn't like and UP didn't change that much.

With the added depth the CG characters are more real and tangible, you actually feel like you are sitting in Pandora as well.

I just thought of an awesome idea for a product, glasses polarized to only 1-half of the 3d so I can see the movie NOT in 3d :-)

Sound was a gimmick & Color was a gimmick...

Sound was a gimmick & Color was a gimmick...

I really enjoy DDD. It is a tool for storytellers and when applied correctly provides a Z track for the story (a "depth track" - think soundtrack) that can immerse one's audiences even more. Of course not unlike 2D, THERE WILL BE SOME BAD FILMS IN 3D. That's not 3D's fault.

I would also agree that a story must be organic to 3D to work well - so no, I would not want to see Casablanca in 3D. I'd pay to see Dorothy and Todo in 3D.

Consumer choice drives the market - so the jury is still out on the longevity of 3D in this cycle. My favorite is a 1954 article in Box Office Magazine decrying 5,000 3D theaters! I would point out that 3D in the 50's failed for two very distinct reasons. First, projection technology was archaic and audiences suffered eye strain due to poor 3D projection. Second, the studios demanded theaters run only the 3D print or else. Theater owners chose the latter.

I've researched this phenomenon exhaustively in my 3D business model development and strategy. Attached are a few slides from my power point presentation that looks to answer today's big question...Boom or Bust?

Well it's certainly booming right now.

Be careful what you wish for... ;)
Somebody might actually 3dize that movie...

That would be tragic.

I have yet to see it. I did have a producer want to turn one of my historical dramas into a 3D film, but I just didn't want to commit until I see how all this new-fangled stuff is going to work, and how audiences and theaters are going to adjust. I somehow feel it is best in action films, but I'm sure time will sort it out.

In a few years, maybe young audiences won't know any difference, like folks born in the 80s don't know what the pre-internet world was like.

We'll see if all you 3D haters are singing the same tune after "Avatar"...

Saw UP in 3D and thought it was fine... for that film it worked. Probably mostly because it is an animated film. But I don't think it made the story any better. I would have enjoyed the film in 2D probably just as much.

Saw the 3D trailer in IMAX and as totally stoked to see it... but found it disorienting and distracting. Perhaps mostly because that's just a bad combination for something with a lot of fast motion and cutting.

Then I saw the most recent trailer for Avatar in "gasp" 2D and for the first time, found myself experiencing the movie as a movie, and paying attention to story instead of analyzing the effect of the 3D.

I do think 3D has its place... but that it will play out again as a fad...

My 2 cents....

My though as well. Anything new must be good, then reality sinks in, and everything sorts itself out.

It will likely be a strong niche industry well suited for certain genre high on popcorn. For story-driven films, however, I'm not sure it will make the cut.

If 3D is the only way a production is released it's one thing. But it seems like most releases today are being screened in 2 and 3D.
