Do you have to power the RED Drive odd AC power when offloading?

Do I need the ac power for my red drive when offloading to a computer or can I just pug it in with Firewire 800/ USB and let her rip.

it's Red's own recommendation to power the Red One drives from AC, but as Tim says many people have been fine without.

Firewire has proved to be a little fragile, and I think Red's recommendation is to try and reduce the incidence of burnt out Firewire ports.

You definitely do not need to power them. In three feature films, with hundreds of downloads, we have never done it using AC, and with n'er an issue.

I've heard it explained that due to the fact that the Red Drives are RAIDs with dual spinning disk drives in each enclosure, the drive is right at the upper limit of the power spec of the Firewire port. So if you chain it with another drive or any other piece of FW gear without AC power, that's when you would risk burning out the port... not sure if that's accurate but sounds logical. Personally never had any issues but I like to use the AC just in case. Luckily the drive takes a generic 12-volt DC barrel connector so if your drive doesn't have an AC adapter you can pick one up cheap at almost any electronics retailer.

I wish I've been that lucky ;) On a short movie set I had two different Red Drives and their respective FW800 ports fried just one day apart. Luckily offload was still possible through the FW400, which worked flawlessly even if not connected to AC.
From the very first time they came back from repair, I have always used AC adaptors and never had any other problems on the FW800 ports.
