Just to add some salt to the wound: never update quicktime or any other crucial component
  • on a production system
  • within the first few weeks of its release
Test it first on a separate system/partition, wait and hear what other daring souls say. At least have a backup of your working system before upgrading.

Larry Jordan recommends not upgrading Quicktime unless you are upgrading Final Cut or the OS or your current system does not work. In other words: never change a winning team / If it ain´t broke, don´t fix it.

Other than that you can try a google on http://www.google.com/search?q=downgrading+quicktime+7.5 (unless Finner has broken it again)
Or check the Apple forum, which might be more appropriate. Here´s one I found with a brief search: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6978999&#6978999

Installed 7.5 here (separate workstation). Redcode works without any prolems...

2xQuad-Core Intel Xeon

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
OSX 10.5.3

Thanx guys! I'm assuming REDCODE works on OSX 10.5.3. I'll try to update my system.

Justin, thank you for that link. I'm on OS 10.4.11. Will is still work?

I was told that REDCODE does not work with G5s. I guess I'll just go out and by a new machine! WEAK!!!

This is the email I just received.

You need to use an Intel based machine. Power PC's architecture will not
work. http://www.red.com/support

Yeah it took me a whole day to figure this out.. prank.

Anyway you'll want to get ahold of a program called Pacifist from charlesoft. It's shareware but it will get you through this for free.

Then you'll need to get your OS's version of Quicktime 7.4.5 from apple. You can just go to apple.com and search Quicktime 7.4.5 [your os cat]

e.g. Quicktime 7.4.5 Tiger

then use Pacifist to zip it all back to 7.4.5

I have had some problems with the new Redcode Quicktime component v3.0. Once upgraded, importing into Avid gives a weird white negative image. Compressor also incorrectly displays the quicktimes with the same effect, but is able to transcode properly, though. Downgrading to Quicktime component 1.5 seems to solve everything. I also saw some significant performance hits on imports with the new component. I went from 12:1 import ratio with the new component to about 6:1 with the old v1.5. I confirmed my findings on both OS 10.4 and 10.5 with the Dual Quad and single Quad computer, and both with Avid Media Composer 2.8.3 and v.3.0. I can safely say I've been around the block with this, so if you don't require the new component (i.e. you are not using footage shot in 4K 16:9), I would recommend against upgrading for the time being, unless someone has some info I'm lacking? Anyone else had this problem?
