  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do any other cameras use 1 3/4 CMOS?

I get confused with the different chipsets sometimes...

The high-end CCD cameras are at 3/4 CCDs, right? (And even some lower end ones like the HPX500, I think). The EX line is 1 1/2 CMOS, correct?

Is red the only line of camera that uses 1 3/4 CMOS, or are the viper, varicam and others using that set-up as well?

And last, could one of you techno-savvy folk please just finally break down why the 3/4 CMOS is better than the 1/2 CMOS. What exactly, to the human eye, does that mean on the small screen?

I'm just in an annoying place where I really want to go out and grab an EX3, but I'm afraid I won't be happy with the visuals anymore once I get my hands on the Scarlet.

EX line uses 3 1/2" CMOS sensors. Higher end cameras generally use 3 2/3" ones. The upside of three sensors is that you get more colour channel information, but on the downside, you can't use any lenses that aren't specially designed for 3 sensor cameras (ie. you have to use B4 mount lenses, which is very expensive) and you can get really bad image problems if they come out of alignment, or if one of the sensors starts messing up.

I'm not sure about the Viper and the Varicam (although I'm fairly sure that the Varicam uses 3 2/3" sensors), but I know that the SI-2K uses a single 2/3" sensor.

I haven't heard of any camera using a 3/4" CCD or CMOS. The Red One has a S35mm sized sensor. Viper uses 3 2/3" CCDs and I'm pretty sure the Varicam's sensor is 2/3", but I'm not sure. And the HPX500 has a 2/3" sensor.

Red uses an S35mm sensor because it allows for shallower depth of field and it allows people to use film lenses on it. If you want to compare looks of sensors, look at some footage from a Canon XH-A1 (which uses 3 1/3" CCDs) and then look at footage from the Red One. You'll notice that the Red allows for better selective focus, giving it a more filmic look, whereas the Canon makes everything in focus. This is due to the smaller chip size.
