  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DNxHD stutter in Avid

When I export QT using DNxHD out of Redcine or Redrushes and bring them into Avid I have found that they slow down and play stuttered (almost seems as though they are duplicating frames). Has anyone else had this problem or know if there is some setting I need to change? I have exported the same clip out of RedRushes using ProRes and brought it into Final Cut w/no problem.

If you import the clip into Avid without an ALE does it stutter then as well?

The ALE needs to be the exact length of the clip. If it's not it will either drop or duplicate frames from the imported media. RedRushes seems to be 1 frame off in the End timecode (it's missing the EDL style of the Start and End according to MichaelP) which removes a random frame from the clip.

Are your hard drives fasr enough to play the sustained data rate?

Yes the drives should be plenty fast. I imported the clip without the ALE per rebusfilms suggestion and it played without the stutter. The clip was originally exported from RedRushes with it looking to the RSX for an in/out point instead of having it on ignore. I'm trying a new export w/ignore on and a new ALE to see if this will fix the problem.

**EDIT**

With RedRushes set to "ignore in/out" in the RSX section the video played back fine. I believe I also had in/out points set when I worked in RedCine earlier. Don't know if I'm an idiot and just missed this in the Avid PDF or if it wasn't in there?

Sounds like a case where the ALE file does not match the duration of the QT itself. The REDCINE to ALE XSL file supports subclips made in REDCINE, but I do not believe that the ALE created in REDrushes is adjusted to match at this time.

I have the same problem:

Made an XML and exported the footage out of Redcine.
Merged the XML into an ALE (Xtrans) for Avid and then imported footage into Avid.

The footage is in slow motion and the timecode drifts. The footage out of Redcine plays fine, so something is wrong with the ALE XML Xtrans or something...

This is serious, really serious because I can't even do offline work with this.
Why not fix the filmscribe output so it works with metacheater? It's a much better program for creating an ALE.

We have zero issues with DNxHD out of RR - sounds like your drives are too slow or your ALE is wrong.

I have the same problem but my system plays 1080p flawlessly and this issue turnes up on DV files at half resolution.
There is no doubt that it's about the ALE created from the Redcine XML.
The ALE creation is done with Xtrans through the description on Avid's website for PC workflow.

Something there isn't working. Metacheater works, but it doesn't work when doint the XML output from Avid for creating high resolution DPX's in redcine based on offline timeline.

We make ALEs in RR and also Scratch without issues.
 
well, as said what's not working is XML - Xtrans/ALE - Avid.
RR and Scratch works and so does metacheater (except that metacheater doesn't work when going back from offline edit to Redcine.

The workflow I'm speaking of is the same as on the Avid site, PC only.
 
I already narrowed this down to a problem in the ALE's... on my side, the ALE created by the conversion with Xtrans and FS_Scan_REDCINE and REDCINE_ALE.
How does this add to the RR and Scratch part of the problem?
 
Are you working in HD or SD? Is the camera shooting at 24fps or 25fps?

SD and 25fps transcoded from 4K 25fps material in redcine.
The material is good, it plays correctly when imported without the ALE.
It's only behaving like this when the ALE is used for batchimport.
 
I would double check the frame rate setting in Redcine.
 
Framerate is 25fps in redcine
 
Hey,

I had this problem the other day. Make sure you are working in a 25P (progressive) Avid project.

Or a 1080 50i (Interlaced) Project.
