  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DNxHD from RedCine into Avid MC6 - PC

You can even make it easier than that. Launch Media Composer. With bin active, import any file - QuickTime, TIFF, whatever. Select your RAID as the destination drive. Media Composer will automatically create the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder and put the now created .mxf file in there. If you still can't find that folder on the root drive of your RAID. then click the masterclip created from the import, go to FILE menu and select "reveal file" it will open the folder containing the MXF file. Now you know where it is.

But as Nick points out, you can't drop QT wrapped DNxHD in there, all managed media is wrapped in MXF, be it DNxHD, ProRes, XDCAM, etc.

Tjere will always be a 1 folder created, it is MC's way of managing the number of files that can be managed by the operating system and will automatically create a 2, 3, when it reaches that point. That is part of the "Avid Managed" that is of benefit to you.

Thanks guys I'll give this a try and report back.

I don't remember seeing an option to select the drive as the destination when you import a file, but might have missed it.
I'm not working with QT at all, only MXF DNxHD. That is the whole reason I'm trying to move to Avid to get away from Apple and QT.

This still isn't working.

I imported in JPEG which created the Avid Mediafiles folder on my RAID drive... good! At least there is that :-)
Then moved the MXF files created from RedCineXPro into the /Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1
These are just loose in that "1" folder now.

I dragged and dropped the AAF file into the bin and the "Media Offline"... I tried Relinking but "No Clips were relinked"
I then tried "Revile File" and get "Unable to find media files for selected clips"

What the hell am I doing wrong?
Where should the AAF files be stored when you drag and drop them into the bin?

Man I must say this is so frustrating even Autodesk Flame is easier to work with getting files in and out

Rory,

If you have all your MXF files in the right location, restart Avid. Once it indexes the drive (which it will do on boot), you can drag the .mdb into a bin. Just a warning though, this will load ALL the media in that directory into the bin.

That is strange that your RAID and Avid are having so many problems communicating. Are the permissions for the drive correct? Is the drive format correct?

Also look at the MediaTool to see if you can see your files there. It is strange all the issues you are having. I have never seen it be so persistent as in your case to not work.

Rory, now that your MXF files are in the right place, and you have your AAF loaded, try going to "File/Refresh Media Directories". Sometimes the database needs to be refreshed to account for the new media and AAF.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, I've done everything you guys have suggest and still no dice. Am going to uninstall and reinstall and hopefully that sorts out this mess. Either that or I'll jump ship to Premier.
Will report back after the reinstall

Thanks again
Rory

So I just did a complete reinstall and still have the issue.

Please could someone tell me the correct place for my files created in RedCineXPro. (RCXP)
I transcoded to MXF AAF DNxHD using RedCineXPro to my footage drive (E)

So do I put all those files into the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder

So... all my MXF files are loose in the folder (not in their own MXF folder that RCXP creates
and the AAF are in the :E/Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder in there own folder called AAF

I then drag and drop the AAF's into my Avid bin.... and Media is Offline

AHHHHHHHHHH

There cannot be a folder within the /1 folder. All .mxf files are managed at the /1 folder level. Pull them out of the AAF folder.

Drag .mxf files (not AAF files) to the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 folder
In your bin, drag all the AAF files

Done.

If you're still having problems, I can give you a call and walk you through it. you can PM me your cell number or send it to me at michael(at)24p(dot)com

Rory,

I am sorry to hear about your problem. I have been making dailies / etc. with REDCINE-X, Avid MC 5.x 9 weeks this year more or less exactly like the other gentlemen described: export MXF / AAF DNxHD36 / 1080p from redcine-x (pro), move the created MXF to the AVID MEDIAFILES/MXF/1 folder and import the AAF to a bin. If you put new MXF in the MEDIAFILES Folder Avid sorts it out while starting up, as soon as you import the AAF the media is online. you don't need to move the AAF anywhere, only the MXF.

have to you tried to export a Quicktime DNxHD from redcine-x and (fast) import this file to Avid?
is there a avid media database in your Mediafiles Folder?

have you tried to delete your mediadatabase and restart Mediacomposer?

all the best,
martin

is there some plugin that needs to be installed for Avid to read MXF DNxHD files coming from RedCineXPro?

I honestly just can't figure out why this won't work.

I am offering again to call you and walk you through it if you think that will help.

Michael

Or Skype and share desktop so I can see what you're doing.

Hey guy,
I'm on a shoot right now and the producer has a what is probably a simple question for all you (but for me, not so much). We've shot Epic R3D files and Alexa ProRes 4444 files and need to edit them in the same sequence on Avid. Also we plan to color correct on a Baselight. What's the procedure for doing the edit and final color correction with the native files?

Transcode both via Resolve, or R3D in REDCINE X and ProRes LogC with 709 LUT in Resolve. Both applications use Avid's SDK for native MXF wrapped DNxHD so metadata will be consistent; filename will be listed in the TAPE column. Final conform and correction will be done via EDL or AAF into Baselight pointing back to the original files.

Thanks, Michael, I think that's what we're after....A way to color correct the R3D's.

Rory,

One thing you might just try is making sure to copy/paste the MXF files generated by RCX into the AVID mediafiles folder, rather than cut/paste. It took me ages to work out that this seemed to be a necessary condition, at least on my system.

I have posted about this before but no one has been able to explain why, might be worth a quick try though.

Cheers,

Chris

thanks Chris... unfortunately that didn't help me as its still can't import the RCX files and show them in Avid.
Hopefully Michael can help me.

Just set up a time where I can Skype and share desktop and show you how it's done, or watch and see what you're doing.
