  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Wireless Follow Focus - 1st Impression

I'm currently testing the DJI unit as well, and so far I'm pretty impressed (I'll normally use Preston single channel F/I's and Bartec's). We used it on set all day today and it performed great. I'm testing a prototype as well, and I haven't experienced any of the issues that Chris has (yet), but then again... it's a prototype. I'll be fully battle-testing it next week on a larger shoot and with some sticky lenses to really see what its made of. Contextually, when you look at it from a sheer price/value/feature perspective, I think it has the potential to be really disruptive. More to come....

Yea, for the price, it seems like a good kit for the money, provided my beta unit is just defective. One issue that I may see being a problem down the line is the lemo power port on the motor. The pins inside the cable are so delicate, mine came bent/tweaked, so if you have someone force it in, things can go wrong. I wish they would have flipped it, meaning the male side would have been on the motor, female side on the cable. May have helped a bit.

We used a demo unit for a two day shoot this week. Really like the build quality, very nice. Though the motors were giving us problem. We had a set of Ziess super speeds and shure they were a bit stiff but not crazy stiff. The auto calibrate failed at the end of the lens. We could work around it by setting manual left and right end points. So the torque is not the best...

Due to the unsolved questions about torque could someone please make a test of the motor with Compact Primes? They are quite standard lenses with mid tightness of focus wheel, so the compatibility of DJI Follow Focus and this lenses would be good indicator of motor's torque possibility. Thanks

We're using a CP 50mm makro prime as well as a Zeiss 70-200 compact Zoom on the film I'm currently shooting. Both are decent sized lenses. Torque handles it fine (we always have it cranked up to the max). This is perhaps the upper limit for this motor based on the max torque rating. But I still have yet to test it on a large zoom. For modern cine primes, it handles it fine. My AC's love the overall ease of use, quality build and precision, but find the 15mm bracket somewhat fiddly. But we've been informed it's being improved. If you've seen the bracketry on the latest Ronins, I'd believe them. It's much improved over the early versions.

It's been on a demanding 12-14 hour day feature shoot with loads of exteriors. And after three weeks so far the unit has held up well. We use it for steadicam, gimbal, hand held as well as tripod work. In short, this is as much a test as one could hope for.

For 2000.00 it's the best deal out there.

Ned, how to you power the motor?

I am interested in the DJI Follow Focus. But I would like to use it also WITHOUT my Ronin. How does this work?

best regards
Norbert

P-tap to the Lemo. Simple to power. Ronin has the built-in P-taps so you're all good!

I'm assuming it's a male p tap to lemo?

Are there any female to female p tap adapters so I can run a 12v to male p tap adapter to a 12v battery pack I have? Thanks.

P tap to Lemo. We do that with both our Anton Bauer Set ups or when we want to go real small, I power it with a Freely Lipo.

Did you go in the menu and crank it up?

When is this shipping? If I ordered one when can I expect it to arrive?

First impression: built quality is amazing! Feels really good, controller is much heavier than expected (which is good!).

Yes, you have to file down the small "ridges" indie the connector. I did it without disassembling the connector, by just using a blade from outside.
