  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Ronin

Hey Guys,

I am pretty sure Willis is on international time that is around 15 hours ahead of Pacific Time right now.

I know Patrick and Willis personally, and I am confident that these guys will be sure to take care of you - they are probably in the midst of some really intense stuff and/or traveling right now and Willis will likely get on the forum at some point in the very near term with some ideas/answers for you.

best,

Dan

Okay - so I just got off the phone with Kyle at AMP.

Here's what he had to say:

Everyone who put a full deposit down on the Ronin for the AMP hosted "group buy" will receive a full refund of the difference between the new price of the Ronin, and what they put down.

There is no longer a "Group Buy" as stated by AMP on the phone just now - however those who put down a deposit will have the very first Dibs on the very first units that are for sale.

It sounds like DJI decided to "give the world a group buy" by doing a surprise price drop - now everyone gets the benefit of a reduced price.

It sounds like AMP was surprised by this, but that it everything will all work out.

Here's the thing about Group Buys - they don't really work out well on products that are being sold by Dealerships, and are never really meant as "direct sales" products by the people who manufacture them. It's great that there is so much fervor for new products. This is where cool stuff like crowd funding comes from (see indiegogo/kickstarter) At the end of the day, the whole group buy thing just gets everyone twisted up in a rage/terror/excitement and no one fully walks away happy.

It's great that there are people super enthusiastic about new products, and who are willing to take up the cause of a product or manufacturer.

I tried my own take on a group buy experiment by selling the Zeiss Cinemizer goggles at a discount. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE FOR US. Logistically, organizationally, everything about it was... less than optimal. Less than 50% of those who committed followed through.

I'm glad I did it though - you know why? I learned A TON about group buys and marketing by running this experiment - it was super cool, and I'm really happy I did it because I think i got all the redusers who opted in the VERY BEST PRICE on a set of Cinemizers that anyone will find for a good long time to come. Fascinating experiment - literally $0 profit, but a good way to reach out and see what is happening with this stuff.

No one should be mad at the awesome price drop (although I can see how it would be annoying to have $1000+ tied up on a deposit for a month or so)... no fault of DJI's ultimately, as they don't sell Ronin direct, and this wasn't really something that was part of their normal process anyway, and Dealers tried to accommodate it. Ultimately the price drop is like the best kind of Group Buy anyone could hope for.

Anyway - about my research on the status of the situation - here is the toll free Aerial Media Pros number where I reached Kyle:

Great news. Thanks for getting back. No one can be mad at the price drop, group buy or not.

Before you go accepting this. The original update on the price was that Dji was going to make good on the group buy. AMP is saying that their margin is so little that they can't throw in the free battery, but I don't think that they were giving the 10% off. It was Dji and Willis indicated that they were going to honor the 10%. The group buy part for AMP was free battery and shipping. I think we should keep a little pressure on DJI to come through with the 10%. They benefited enormously by the group buy effort.

I've never been one to look a gift horse in the mouth, but as this thing continues to evolve it seems like deals get better all the time.

I'm personally not buying ANY gimbals at this time, but really, I kinda feel like its splitting hairs here. I just want to see everyone benefitting from these new technologies and putting them to creative use.

The one thing I know is that this will all pan out, and that hopefully things can go back to being more chill here on the forum.

Anyway - hang in there - it's all good.

Like you are saying- your not buying one, you didn't put $4000 out of commission for the last seven weeks- there was no down payment- it was pay in full, and the new rep for Dji promised to honor the group buy 10% off, he did say that he didn't know what AMP would do about the battery and shipping- splitting hairs- no, not at all. Now that AMP has reneged on the battery, the 10% percent off from Dji would cover that.

Willis announcement regarding the 10% discount on top of the price drop.
If DJI have said so then I think dealer has no option but to give the 10%. Plus a free thumb controller for all group buy folk. Which again Willis has mentioned. I haven't heard any U turn on the thumb controller or the 10% discount from DJI. I've been following all the Ronin threads closely.

Yes..there were no deposits put down...group buy was paid in full price weeks ago.

And the terms were 10% off Ronin list price.
And the free thumb controller.
And the free battery.

If those terms have changed they need to get on here and explain it without Dan having to call them.

No-one expects AMP to lose money on this.
But if the group buy is not honored than
AMP should not assume we want to buy Ronin from them at $2,999 retail.
There are better deals out there that offer free shipping and 4% store credit back.

The group buy should have never started to grow without first getting the O.K. from DJI.
You can not do a group buy without firstly getting co-operation of the main company.
That was fraudulent..misleading..and a mistake and that list of like 250 names should have been shut down by Mods.

These people preordered this equipment months before actual release date so usually they offer %10 off while you preorder something.%10 for group buy must be joke or something

I believe the power of group buys can be achieved if only it is done with the original company and not the dealer. Dealers will have limited % margins to play with. At times the companies give higher margins to dealers when they lift in bulk and some of that the dealer passes off to the customers. However, hoping for that to happen and start a group buy with a dealer is not right.

Starting a dealer led group buys or group discount schemes can be dangerous because the company may not allocate the right quantity of products, especially in new product situations. Also a dealer will have mandate for a limited geography. How can a dealer cater to products throughout the world? So Steve is right to a great extent.

I don't think moderators should close down a thread because how can they know that the reduser who has started a thread has permission of the company or not. Moderators are choosen from the redusers. They are not employees. Hindsight is always right.

I am not aware what percentage margins dealers have in the Ronin. However, I would expect that the dealer would not go into loss by honouring the 10% for group buy. In terms of pure numbers it may not be sufficient to give one extra battery and I guess if the dealer gives 10% but not the battery then people would be fine.

In this case the 10% discount is hardly 300 usd. Nevertheless if there is no discount, there is one reason to be aggrieved as the dealer AMP had taken 100% in advance citing the difficulty of extensive coordination required if they had taken only a partial deposit. So the dealer enjoyed the free interest on the total deposit, played the game when it was to their advantage and bailed out when the situation changed.

I am sure Willis would clarify the reasons.

The group buy should have never started to grow without first getting the O.K. from DJI.

Hi guys,

As I have been extremely busy with phone calls and emails, I was not aware of this thread. I am just now seeing this thread, and began reading some of the comments. I have busted my butt and dealt with so much in regards to this GB. To see some of the posts and words used is just saddening.

The terms I set at the beginning were based on a price of $4500. Yes, at that point I could offer free shipping, free battery, and 10% off. Now with a price drop of $1500, Obviously my profit margin was effected. I am not sure why some would just assume they would still get all the free spiffs and discounts along with a $1500 discount. I will say that almost everyone I spoke to over the phone was perfectly OK with simply receiving the new $2999 price over the original GB $4500 price Free battery 10% off deal. I had no idea DJI was dropping the price. It was a surprise that I woke up to. Since then I have been struggling to get everyone taken care of, to come up with a new deal and still cover my costs associated of getting the ronin's to my shop, such as express shipping from china at approx $250 each, Import fees/Duties of approx. $60, Paypal fees of approx. $65, etc etc etc. and people are still wanting $290 discount on top of the new price. It would literally cost me money to sell you a Ronin if we kept the same terms with free shipping and free battery. I am really trying hard to come up with a deal that would be a Win Win for us all.

One person emailed me and demanded that I "HONOR" the terns of 10% off and the free battery. If that is so, shouldn't they "HONOR" the original agreed price of $4500.

It just sucked to have someone question my integrity and honor when I have bent over backwards trying to get through this GB.

Please understand that the group buy deal was what we originally agreed on at the $4500 price. It does not mean that deal applies at any new price. Also please note that I have repeatedly stated that ANYONE can have an immediate refund if they would so like. This GB and Pre-Payment was voluntary, if you did not like any terms or conditions, simply do not participate, or simply ask for a refund which I would grant right away.

Sorry to ramble on guys, No need to beat a dead horse. This is the last you will hear from me on the subject.

lets move forward and get this GB done with once and for all.

Perfectly explained by Patrick.

When the buyers know that AMP is bearing import duties and all other costs, one can see that the margins become razor thin. I am sure with the new deal people will not complain. Look forward to users now posting footage from their ronins.
