  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

Hi James, I own a Ronin and can't imagine a full size Alexa ever working. An Alexa body alone weighs 17 pounds plus and the Ronin is rated for 15. Then there is the length issue. I have the Cinemilled arm, pan and post extensions just to get my Epic working with a LW zoom and battery. An Alexa with any lens would be too long and too top heavy I think, even if the overall weight could be sorted. And the extensions put more strain on the motors, so being lighter is more critical for good response and handling. There is a new Ronin designed for longer and beefier cameras. Big and pricey though.

Thanks for the answer Jeff. Much appreciated. I found this video which appears to show a heavily stripped Alexa running on the DJI (https://vimeo.com/117094572) which is 8 months old so this isn't a new version of the DJI as far as I can tell. It seems to have some mod using longer arms (to allow the Alexa's awkwardly long body to fit). Apart from that there doesn't seem to be any other info on the net as far as I can tell.

Many thanks again. Nice one.

Those are the Cinemilled arm extensions. They are excellent. Judging from what they show, it's possible to balance, but performance looks poor since it's a couple pounds overweight. Operating responsiveness would be limited -- all the torque is going into keeping it in one place. Looks to have trouble with even a simple pan. And no FF (or power solution). I would not be optimistic.

But it you try it keep the FF as low as possible. And I would recommend at least the Cinemilled pan bar extension as well. It helps center the weight with the longer arms under the pan motor so it works less hard. The post extensions are also a big help as they drop the camera's center of gravity so balance is easier (or possible) with bigger set-ups. Pedro has good videos on the Cinemilled website showing how they install/work and some build examples.

Was there ever a review on this thread?

Ha ha...

Please SPANK me now... I deserve it... :)

No... There wasn't one...

But there will be one form on the set of the current film shooting in Mauritius I am DP'ing, we are suing the Ronin and also the Ronin-M with an RC monster Car and also couple of Inspires...

Bad, very bad on my part to let something like this undone for so long, but no one has really any idea of how things have progressed since making this process, and no one should really give a shit, I made a promise and never delivered...

I WILL!!

And it will be surely the best reviews gear ever, as it sure time give me the occasions to work the fuck out of the Ronin and now Ronin-M... :)

No need for a mega review. Just give us the skinny on what works and what doesn't. Ronin's have been out for a while and there's a lot of info out there but people still run into certain issues (horizon drift, auto tune loop, ideal calibration, etc). Any light you can shed on common problem solving with the Ronin would be most appreciated. But if you still need to be spanked, I know this place below Canal St,.......

Thanks

The Trump of REDUSER!

Edited:

The Quoted text in your reply: "And it will be surely the best reviews gear ever" Is meant as the best reviews I have ever made.

But Thanks for comparing me to him, I take that as a compliment considering his achievements!!

I will Ned,

Just need couple of more weeks to finish up Pre-Production on this Bollywood/Hollywood Movie I am DP'ing here in Mauritius, I need to make a quick trip to Dubai and upon my return to Mauritius I'll do this once and for all with the help of our film crew...

And I'll do both the Ronin and also the Ronin-M.

No more delays!!

Which bollywood film is that? Who is the director?

dont take this as on offence but i dont think a review is needed after all this time. probably everyone has used it so far and there is a new version out (they dont even tell it its a bit different to the old one,...) and ronin M,... and alot of reviews online... so maybe focus on some other review more then on this. its just not worth it in my opinion. its "old" gear

"69 reality in us" by Samir Khan.

No offense taken at all...

On this one I have truly fucked up... And am sorry beyond words...

Knowing what I was involved with, at the time I made this promises, I should have not done it, as I was way too overwhelmed with a series of BIG things...

But only reason I am still doing it is because I continue to receive lots of requests for it, so I will, and it is just fair that I do so, as it was a promise I made, and not matter what I always keep my promises... Always.

Hello Ketch,

can I use Redvolt XL module with Redvolt XL battery with Ronin C arm (80mm)? Or can I buy only B arm (50mm)?

Thank you

Karel

Yes Karel you can, however you'll need to Counter-balance the Gimbal via moving the camera as forward as allowed... So to free back room for the XL Battery off the XL Battery Module, and depending lens weight and overall length, you'll also need to place some of the add ons accessories on opposite sides to proper balance the Gimbal's Tilt axis.

Thank you, Ketch.
I want to buy Ronin with longer arms.
And put the Raven with CP.2 21mm and DSMC2 Base Expander and Redvolt Module and Redvolt XL battery and Paralinx Ace.
So It's a 2 lbs in front with CP.2.
3,5 lbs Raven body in the middle.
And 3,02 lbs with Base Expander, Redvolt XL Module and Battery at the back.
So I guess I just move the camera a little bit in front. :)
