dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

hay man how is the test going any photos :)

Hey buddy,

today we had a stop by Ronin HQ Los Angeles for a nice talk to Willis and the boys, plus got to see few fellow Reduser in action with the Ronin.

My Test-Shoot has not begin yet, and still looking thru the emails and messages to see whom I let be part of, and actually still room for some Pros in this community to join, as I prefer to have olesser but o higher experience Filmmakers as to better give the Ronin (XL) a run for its money...

Curt will be bringing some serious ZOOM Power and accessories, and hoping the Ronin (XL) can handle to Cabrios, and still looking for few extra Reduser to participate and bring some more gear to trwo at the Ronin (XL) and trow the Ronin (XL) at... :)

Final Test_Shoot will most likely be this weekend.

What gear do you need?

I like to get together a small group of us that includes some of those that already have a Ronin on order or want one, and that have their own cameras/lenses and other gear.

Basically setting up a nice station with as much gear as possible to put thru the test.

I'll bring DragonM8 with XL Module (to test out it's capacity to run on the Ronin (XL) with Schneider Xenon Cine Primes.

Curt as I said above is bringing the Cabrio, and like to have a Viv Matte Box too.

Then if any one is interested in testing other Cine lenses such as the Summilux Cine Primes which give hell to the Movi we tested, but I imagine now the Movi will do well too, any ways, just any lenses that fellow Reduser like to see put on the Ronin (XL) to see how much this longer Arms can handle.

Any other gear, such as as anything that can be used to mount the Ronin (XL) on will be good to.

Really open to any Tests any wine here want to see.

Thanks to our fellow Reduser Austin from Slacklinefilms for the 3' Super Thin super flexible LCD EVF Cable, that we'll put to use with DragonM8 on the Ronin (XL) test Shoot.

Questions:

1. How much does it weigh with battery?
2. Does the gimbal battery also power the RED?
3. How does it attach to a Steadi style arm?

1) We'll be bringing a precise scale to the shoot and weight out the entirety of the rig with the XL Arms as well as some individual parts to give every one a better idea of what they are looking at as far as the overall weight, and what could be shaved off if some parts were made in CF.

2) Power to camera is not provided by the battery attached to the Ronin it self, but separately in your favorite flavor, from Redvolts on Side Handle to XL Redvolt in XL Module, to V-Lock or AB Battery via either a Rear, Side or Top battery mount.

The on board battery however does power the Ronin for several hours, and possibilities are to be discussed on what it can be done to have it also power the camera, but this is a two way street, with positives and negatives which will need to be analyzed before even going there.

3) I'll show pictures of what I think is the best option, and not just for the Steady, but for any variety of set ups.

Thanks for the efforts. Give Willis a squeeze for me ;-)

Oh and . . . congrats on being the Official DJI Premiere source. They have chosen a great advocate in you!

You have sure done a good share of great efforts yourself Zeb... So my pleasure to also do what I can... And I will for sure, seen him again today... :)

Thanks, it's a pleasure working with DJI, and happy that Willis is the go to guy in LA and the one I will be primarily dealing with.

Later today I'll hopefully have time to do a first UPDATE post run of detail pictures and weight/dimension analysis of the various elements.

I will also post final date for the actual Test-Shoot and location as to allow fellow Reduser to work their schedules out and deduce if they can participate or not.

9 lbs? Damn... my octo can lift 10, maybe 15 lbs. But I suppose one doesn't have to install all the bits and pieces when using Ronin on a multicopter... right?

9LB! The Movi is under 4lb. The M15 is suppose to be under 5lb. I guess that is the premium i paid for. I won't lie however i was super impressed by the Ronin when i first saw it at NAB much better build then any of the other competitors to the MOVI, but since i'm out and out in the jungle and streets and am just mobbing around with the movi one/two handed for 5hr straight, spending an extra $10k to lose 5LB is SOO worth it considering that you could pay $10k to lose only 1LB with the Carbon Fiber Dragon.

Thanks Ketch for your doing this review. Excited to know more.

Good work Ketch! Many thanks for the review.

My pleasure Dominik!!

Ketch, Thank you for your great contribution as always :-) looking forward your tests!!

My pleasure Ivan!!

The Ronin is one of the most impressibly build Gimbals out there, extremely solid, and this is the reason for the weight.

Most of it is metal parts, and that is were your weight comes from...

But I can almost guarantee you that there will be things to come from DJI in order to allow those that have the extra money to spend to see their wishes of making their Ronin the lightest as possible come true.

At this time I would not speculate if this would be via a series of CF, or other light weight materials or pif directly with an entire different version of the Ronin, but I look forward to the future of things with what the team at DJI has coming... :)

For now having an absolutely great time with the Ronin (XL) and look forward to show you a fully set up DragonM8 on it like I have seen NO other Gimbal been able to take on... :)

Maybe I missed something - where's the review? A few photos do not make a review ;-)

He he, impatient I see... :)

In order to make the review, we'll have to first take it out for a good spin with the Epic fully set up on it... And after that will post pics of that set up on the Ronin and with it a full review... :)

This will likely be happening in the next few days, right before I take off for Italy.

For now, what I am sharing is first bits and pieces of info about the rig, the XL Arm, the weight, the case and so on.

Ask away any questions and we'll see to answer them.

Can you power the epic with the dji battery or is it only for the gimbal motors? If not what is youre favorit way to wake up the beast?

Edit: I looked at the "DJI Ronin / RED Carbon Dragon Demo - NAB 2014" on vimeo a second time and noticed they got no power cable in. So i guess the like the red volts and that you cant power of the rig.

But i hope you can

There was at least one section in the other Ronin thread that touched on this subject:

Yeah, unfortunately, as I reply earlier in this thread to Zeb, at list at this time the current DJI Battery on the Ronin is limited to 3AMP Power draw, so not enough to power up the Epic.
