  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

dji Ronin (XL) Multi Test-Shoot/Review!

I was trying to follow a snowboarder in a halfpipe with movi and it was really hard, can you do some fast "non scripted" follow movement to see how good the response is. nothing slow...
Thanks,
uros

I am a snowboarder as odd as it sounds living in Greece. Follow single operator mode is not going to work for you for half pipe or generally following such big turns and change of direction with any of the known gimbals, its very very hard. Doing this with a joystick single operator will be very hard as well . Dual operator however is your best chance.
having said that our patented controller is the only thing that will work for dynamic moves in single operator mode, and it will be introduced on IBC2014.

we might develop it to work for all other gimbals as long as they can take the data.

Feel free to visit us at IBC2014. to demo all the new gear.

Kind regards

Uros, Insee what you mean and possibilities are always there to allow for creative operating but each piece of equipment must be taken in mind for what it is meant to do and accessories according my I order to further allow such a gear to be implemented in a variety of other unique shot creation, what you are asking to do is not a easy done task but surely not impossible to do if set up properly.

Constantin,

if this your are promoting is an actual accessory to make the use of the Ronin a better experience and possibilities them by all means continue to share!!

thanks... :)

Ketch read again. Iam talking about a new controller that doesnt exist . if you feel Iam doing harm in your promotion with a future product, which doesnt exist of yet.well....and it will possibly work for all gimbals when and if decide to market it. Its news. if you still feel that way I will remove.

4:15am here no sleep and on an iPhone...

that at is why I wrote what I wrote, was most positive that such was the case of an other of your great accessories, but had to be sure!!

look forward to it... :)

either way and since I am using product names I will remove to be fair game. cheers. We will consider the option, after we launch it on IBC, there are many factors need to be taken in consideration before we do this.

no prob its late here as well. Names removed

regards

Ketch - as long as you're asking - I'm curious if the ronin will carry the Canon C300, height-wise. I use this camera fairly often, and have seen the Red and the Canon DSLRs mounted, but not one of the Canon Cine cams. It looks as tho' the mount base will allow the user to adjust for various heights. Can you confirm this? Many thanks in advance -

Hey guys,
I know what you are talking about, we did it with second operator as well and we tried all the different things, like that the 2nd operator only controls up and down movement and the gimbal operator is following left to right...
We got the shots in the end but with a lot of hard work and luck as well :)

What I wanted from Ketch is that he just shows us where the limits to Ronin are. Just a test with 3 different speeds of random movement and trying to follow it... and we will know the limits of this gimbal.
I hate when you watch the promo shots that are made just for gimbal and everything looks perfect... just doesnt give the real feel of what the thing can do. Remember how Movi was called "game changer" but I really havent seen the game changing a lot :)

Sometimes I have a feeling people are afraid to show the weakneses of one product...

hey it would be much easier to have a jimmy jib experienced or other robotic crane operator that he is really good with joystick control, to control pan and tilt and just have the skier slide together with the snowboarder. Separating axis control to different people can be more complex, than separating jobs.

But its all there depending on the experience , and the equipment and skills.

kind regards

If I come across a Steady operator in Paris, Lugano or Italy I'll try and see to make it happen... No promises at this time, as I'll have my plate very full already with the proposed tests with the Ronin on a series of shoots were the Steady is last on my list... Nonetheless I again, will not turn away from the opportunity to do this set up and test it if it presented itself.

Hello Ketch,

I already experimented with using a brushless gimbal on my steadicam together with a bracket that allows to change the camera height during the shot. If you are near Stuttgart, Germany in the next time I'ld be pleased if you might visit me in order to test that setup with the Ronin. I'm also interested in offering a custom bracket of this kind for the Ronin, using it's quick release system.

Like Constantine mentioned in another post, it's the mass of the steadicam sled together with the camera that creates the inertia necessary to isolate the system from vertical movements. Mounting a gimbal on the steadicam arm alone has no advantages in vertical stabilization compared to handheld as the mass of the gimbal is the same. But it makes a lot of sense to put the gimbal on the sled, either directly to the topstage in low or heigh mode or together with a 45 degree bracket that allows to move the camera from ground level to over head height. Another plus of the steadicam + gimbal solution is that you might do tracking shots of an hour or longer without any problem.

Is it possible to enable follow mode separately with the Ronin for pan and tilt? If not, it's still a possible option to set the mode to stabilization only and have pan and tilt operated by a remote operator. That should be possible with the Ronin as far I can tell from the specs and videos. As you can see in my video, I enabled follow mode for pan in the alexmos software while the tilt was stabilization only. That makes it possible for the operator to control the pan on it's own, which allows better start-stop-timing between pan moves and walking. If you mount the gimbal to the sled directly and without the rollover function, it should be possible to use follow mode for pan and tilt with the Ronin, even if they are not selectable separately.

Best regards,
Andreas

what is the advantage of mounting de gimbal with a 45 degree angle instead of straight on the sled?

If you mount it straight on the sled you might turn the sled from heigh to almost low mode regardless, but on the opposite side the rear cfk tube will enter the frame before the 180 degree rollover is completed.

Hey Jerry,

I only use the Dragon, but if I'll come across some one here that has one I will surely give it a spin for you, I however do not see any problems, as the Ronin has so far been configured in many ways that I could have not done with other Gimbals I tried.

While that is not entirely my goal Uros, I will definitely give the Ronin a run for it's money, and already have had a good start with a fully loaded Epic, of which Pics and vids I'll be posting soon, just returned form our first test shoot in Switzerland, and have a good load of info to share as soon as I can put a first review together.

Several other shoots are been planned, and each for a specific purpose so I hope that this thread at the end will have some for every one.

Thanks for the input Andreas, I am scheduled for a Germany visit, but do not have a date yet and specific locations, but if I end up near your location I'll call upon you for sure, as I do not use nor intend to use a Steady, but for the sake of other fellow Reduser that might want to, I would gladly do this test as well.

if you are going to germany please let me know, maybe i will drive over to catch up and see the ronin;)

Btw, I want to post this and thank again Luigi Valtulini, a fellow Reduser/Filmmaker and good friend, which I visited yesterday in his hem town of Switzerland, were I brought the Ronin for it's first Test-Shoot, of which we'll discuss here in the days to come in detail, and Luigi is working on a little piece form some of the shots, just note that this was a technical test set up to see how it would react with a particular set up and a particular shooting mode, the Briefcase mode.

Again, in the days to come I'll post pictures and some video material, and more are to come form other real shoots, with different set ups as we experiment in the difference mode, and this is just a pic of us and a first Thank You note to Luigi and Team at Cine5K for the great hospitality!!

Jerry,
Apologies for the late response to this inquiry, but here you can see the C300 being on the Ronin, works fantastic! These aren't even the XL Arms.

Hi Willis.

While we're playing the "Will it fit?" game... I see DJI has posted technical specifications. The camera size spec states:

Supported Camera Dimensions: Maximum depth at center of mass on camera base plate: 140mm

I'm not entirely sure what that means. Does that mean that the back of the gimbal with the standard arms is 140mm from the mounting point or is it 70mm? I assume the camera's balance point has to be in the center of the mounting plate so is there another 140mm past the balance point of the camera to the back?

I have a PMW-F3 and an EX-1. I know we've traded some e-mails back and forth but thought I couldn't be the only one with this question so I thought I would ask here as well.

THANKS!
