  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Inspire 1. . . how good?

Here is another not very technical side by side camera compairison of the Inspire, GP4 and GH4.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oDDXhjxAuZU

Lost me at "Settings Default". Test and process each at their best settings for each scenario: HDR like with white clouds, Jello inducing situations (wind, high shutter speed etc), Low Light . . . all using the tools provides like GoPro Studio. The person running the tests chose an environment that has flat exposure values so DR is not tested. The cameras are hard mounted so no Jello can take place. Pretty much a throw away from a testing point of view.

Read the effusive video intro text and you can tell this is not an arm's length review. Smells like it was paid for and the review was written by a PR staffer.

Anyone have links to a well done, independent, side by side comparison of the H4B, Inspire and GH4? Hype aside, bet a buck the Inspire is not in the same image quality league as the other two. Maybe one day - but not today.

Looks pretty good..minus the fact that you can't fly it with IOS yet :/

Just released today. Tested it out this morning and it works perfectly. They even incorporated a live histogram into the latest iOS version that looks to be quite accurate and useful.

Extremely fun and easy to fly. The footage I find to be extremely "video" looking. Moire is an issue but these are things we know given the price and camera. I do wish DJI made higher quality and stronger ND filters, though.

The default settings are way to sharp and contrasty. Switch to log mod and reduce the sharpening and contrast. A good ND filter is also important.

Has anyone compared it to a Phantom 3?

I have both, and everything is very similar on both. Only thing is Inspire is more stable.

As far as the comments on the codec are, I strongly agree. It makes nice down converted 1080P, but 4k is too noisy and the moire as bob said is a bitch. I'd say barely passable in 4k. However DJI is a company like RED, they listen. I suspect we'll have more then a few option coming down the road.

Having owned some of the big boys that can carry a red, there is no comparison on how well this thing flies. The integration is incredible. Stability is unbelievable. Hats off.

I would need to see more samples but on the last movie I did I had to reject the footage from this camera. Now keep in mind, it was to be intercut with Alexa and Red Dragon footage, so no easy task. But the footage was just too buzzy and oversharpened. Perhaps there was a way the operators could have modified settings to improve the footage but for our needs I just couldn't pass footage. They did a second day to improve on the first and it improved but unfortunately I still couldn't pass it. I think in isolation with optimized settings the camera is probably great, could definitely see using it for certain things.

I've cut inspire and red footage no problem. You just have to shoot it right and process it right.

I didn't have control over the filming part, so can't speak to that. It's possible they had some settings that caused issues but there were shots with a lot of trees and details and the footage was unacceptable based on the quality threshold for this particular movie. I also brought VFX in to look at to get their thoughts and they reached same conclusion. And finally, the DP (who was not part of the actual shoot as it was second unit) also said no go.

So, this shouldn't be taken as a complete slam against the camera and more of a warning to make sure to do lots of tests if you'll be using one on a critical project. Nick, your work is always stellar, so I know you wouldn't use something if it wasn't up to the task. So I'm not surprised you got great results. Perhaps more testing could have prevented or at least minimized the issues I was seeing on our show. But honestly, they should have just flown a Dragon and called it a day.

While waiting on the Inspire2, I got me a P3 - 4k image doesn't look too shabby if you dial down the sharpness and use the LOG setting. Resolve 12 actually does a great job to automatch it to material from other cameras, at least as a starting point, and within the limits of a long GOP codec. But yeah, I would take HD raw material from a BM Pocket any day over 4k H264 from the Phantom3/Inspire camera.

Yup. Thats the way. It's obviously not an epic, but it's pretty damn good looking if you aren't pixel peeping it. Actually even some of the dit nerds I know were pretty impressed.

May I ask you witch ND are you using on the Phantom 3, if you bought some?
Most of the people on the phantom boards (DJI, Phantompilots) are newbies and I can't seem to find good infos.
Thanks

hi willis,

the only problem with dji is the shamefully bad customer service, the products are amazing but i was shocked how bad my purchase experience was with ronin m.
