Has anyone attempted making this? I know a tangent wave is an amazing console, but I think a diy method would also work.Three mouse balls and the f1-12 keys with some other multi axis joysticks. What kind of software end stuff would be written to control this? Any binary wonders out there? APPLE PRO RES 444!

Euphonix is coming out with very reasonable one.

$1499.

Looks cool. I wonder what the experienced colorists would perceive as the strengths/weaknesses of their design vs. the Tangent Wave

I like the look of the Euphonix trackwheels. 9 programmable keys that update their function from room to room in Color sounds pretty cool too. If street price is around $1200 or less it'll be tough for be to resist that one.

can some one explain why they can't make one of these for under $300? It's basically a midi controller with 3 trackballs... what's the deal?

hehe...because its for the film industry...everything has to cost ten times more and people still scream: yeah 8000 dollars? wow thats cheap for this film teethbrush. i order 3.

i mean, I was pissed when I learned I had to buy a $5000+ tripod, but it makes sense in that it's a limited market, they don't manufacture many units, and it's a prescision piece of equipment, it has to work 100% of the time and failure could mean $100,000 in trashed equipment.

...but this is 3 trackballs and some buttons... I don't get it.

R&D for the software maybe?

Sure!

Good thing with RED is that it pushes the needs from a very low volume market and into a more mass-like market.

That makes the economy different...

I still dig the "Film toothbrush", though.
Anyone bought any "non-film" steel rods lately?

what software? like I said, it's basically a midi interface, it does a task instead of your mouse. not exactly difficult stuff. That dudes selling software that does the same thing for $15... $15!!!

Euphonix created the efficient protocol called EuCon which is used for their higher end system and they brought that down to the affordable controller lineup. You know how Contour design's shuttle works and EuCon is whole lotta different from USB controlled environment. And if you compare to MIDI protocol, gawd.

maybe there's a lot more to this than i understand, but where does the efficiency play into it? it's not hardware intensive when I use my mouse to drag across a color wheel, why would it be more intensive for trackball?

I guess they could if they used cheap components, had superficial quality check, sold six figures of units, didn't care about profit and if you wouldn't mind waiting a couple of weeks for an email response from a customer service representative... :)

Logitech has sold over a billion mouse units so far. They make roughly 8 million units per month these days.

I agree about the usual additional film industry tax, but that also depends on multiple factors.

yeah, but a mouse is like $10. This is *$1500*, and considered the "cheap one"

obviously I'm just bitching and I don't mean to be a downer, but i am very curious why on earth something like this is so ridiculously expensive.

Simple answer?

Because they can.

Like the film brush :P

If you look at it...R&D plus the software plus the customer service, man hours, production etc. I can't imagine everyone buying one of these, they aren't going to sell A LOT like say the disposable camera but they are going to sell enough...

At this price it kills off the rest of the market quite well...so it is claimed to be the cheaper one...bunch of track balls and buttons yes..gettin them to work together? mmmm slightly harder but still possible...
I think theres a lot more inside of it and to it then whats on the surface...maybe someone buy one and crack it open?

either way. its goin to sell and thats what keeps the prices where they are...
Stop buying and prices will surely drop until demand picks back up (although thats in theory)

I just mentioned a mouse example to make a point about the number of sold units, although they can go up to $100 (new Performance Mouse MX for example), the price which would undoubtedly be many times higher if the market was as small as this one.

i am selling some film soap for 65 bucks.....

its so special, you can feel the difference when touching a lens when you used it, and its lighter and has a special formfactor...you can order middleeuropean hands, asian hands etc.
